Russian music in the early twentieth century was marked by the coexistence of diverse musical styles based on the tradition of late Romanticism. Nikolai Karlovich Medtner (1880-1951) was a composer and pianist who worked in the same period as Alexander Scriabin and Sergei Rachmaninoff. On the basis of his musical outlook, which emphasized classical tradition and formal beauty, Medtner established a distinctive musical world. His works are characterized by organic unity achieved through motivic development and transformation, polyphonic voice construction, and a complex harmonic language. These features are particularly prominent in his piano sonatas.
This study focuses on Medtner's early piano sonata, 〈!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --〉〈Piano Sonata No. 1 in F minor, Op. 5〉 and aims to analyze its formal structure and musical characteristics in order to examine the features of Medtner's early compositional style. As its research method, this study first conducts a literature review on Medtner's life, musical thought, the historical background of Russian music, and previous studies. On this basis, it carries out a score analysis of all four movements.
〈!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --〉〈Piano Sonata No. 1 in F minor, Op. 5〉 is a large-scale sonata consisting of four movements, each of which has a distinct character while forming a close organic relationship with the others. The first movement, based on sonata form, presents and develops the principal motives. The second movement reveals a Romantic sensibility through chorale-like figurations and lyrical melodies. The third movement develops around dotted rhythms and figurations spanning a wide register, while bell-like sonorities suggest a Russian musical color. The fourth movement recalls and integrates the principal motives and figures from the preceding movements, thereby bringing the entire work to a comprehensive conclusion.
The analysis shows that this work forms a cyclic structure through the continuous development and transformation of motives across movements. In particular, the closing figures of each movement are transformed into important motives in the following movement, thereby integrating the four movements into a single organic structure. In addition, the second and third movements deliberately withhold a sense of final closure and are designed to converge toward the fourth movement, strengthening the structural unity of the entire work. Furthermore, the fusion of German classical formal principles and Russian musical language reveals Medtner's distinctive compositional technique and musical identity.
Therefore, Medtner's 〈!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --〉〈Piano Sonata No. 1 in F minor, Op. 5〉 may be regarded as a representative work of his early style, in which classical formal beauty, late Romantic expressiveness, and a cyclic motivic structure are organically combined.
