Nikolai Medtner (1880–1951) is one of the significant composers in twentieth-century Russian piano music. Active during a period in which European music developed through diverse stylistic currents in the early twentieth century, Medtner has often been discussed as a composer who maintained continuity with the Austro-German traditions of Classicism and Romanticism. For this reason, his music has frequently been understood as having a strong traditional orientation. However, the Piano Sonata in E minor, Op. 25 No. 2, one of his representative large-scale single-movement piano works, not only clearly demonstrates structural unity and traditional sonata principles, but also reveals a complex and individual musical idiom through its treatment of mode and tonality, harmonic color, textural construction, rhythmic drive, and the transformation of thematic material.
This study first reviews previous research on Medtner’s life and musical aesthetics, and then conducts a systematic score-based analysis of the work, focusing on formal structure, mode and tonality, harmony, rhythm, and the development of thematic material. The analysis shows that the “traditionality” of the work is primarily manifested in the order of its overall structure, the maintenance of a tonal center, the logic of cadential processes, and motivic unity. By contrast, its “innovation” appears in the way Medtner deepens harmonic color, diversifies textural construction, strengthens rhythmic drive, and continuously transforms thematic material within a traditional framework. In other words, the value of this work lies neither in its simple inheritance of tradition nor in its complete departure from it, but rather in its expansion of musical tension and individual expression through harmonic color, textural construction, rhythmic treatment, and thematic development, while still being grounded in traditional sonata principles and tonal centrality.
Therefore, Medtner’s “traditionality” and “innovation” should be understood not as opposing concepts, but as two creative principles that operate interdependently within the same work. Through an analysis of the Piano Sonata in E minor, Op. 25 No. 2, this study examines how Medtner constructed a musical idiom with twentieth-century characteristics within a traditional sonata framework. Furthermore, it seeks to reconsider his distinctive artistic value and historical significance within the development of twentieth-century Russian piano music.
