The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of customers’ perceived selection attributes of five-star hotel HMR(Home Meal Replacement) products on continuous purchase intention and to verify the mediating effect of purchase attitude in this relationship. Recently, the HMR market has continued to grow due to the increase in single-person households, the expansion of dual-income households, and the growing trend toward convenience and premiumization in dietary lifestyles. In response to these changes, the hotel industry has also been actively expanding HMR products based on its premium brand image. However, previous studies have mainly focused on general HMR products, convenience store HMR, meal kits, and RMR(Restaurant Meal Replacement), while relatively few studies have analyzed the structural relationships among selection attributes, purchase attitude, and continuous purchase intention in the context of five-star hotel HMR products. Therefore, this study aims to empirically analyze how the selection attributes perceived as important by customers affect purchase attitude and continuous purchase intention in the consumption context of five-star hotel HMR products.
To achieve the research objective, the selection attributes of five-star hotel HMR products were classified into sub-factors based on previous studies: health and menu diversity, convenience, quality, and price. Purchase attitude and continuous purchase intention were set as the main variables. For the empirical analysis, a survey was conducted among consumers who had recently purchased five-star hotel HMR products. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS statistical program, and frequency analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and mediation effect analysis were performed.
The results of the analysis showed that the selection attributes of five-star hotel HMR products had a significant effect on purchase attitude and also had a positive effect on continuous purchase intention. In addition, purchase attitude was found to have a significant effect on continuous purchase intention, indicating that the formation of a positive purchase attitude can lead to repeated and continuous purchasing behavior. Furthermore, purchase attitude was confirmed to have a mediating effect in the relationship between the selection attributes of five-star hotel HMR products and continuous purchase intention. This suggests that, in order to encourage continuous purchases of hotel HMR products, strategies should not be limited to strengthening product attributes alone, but should also focus on forming positive consumer attitudes.
These findings indicate that the selection attributes perceived by customers in the five-star hotel HMR market are not merely functional product attributes, but are closely connected with quality trust, convenience, health orientation, price appropriateness, and menu diversity provided by hotel brands. In particular, the results confirm that enhancing positive attitudes formed during the purchasing process is important for increasing customers’ continuous purchase intention, along with strengthening the competitiveness of the product itself.
This study has academic significance in that it expands existing HMR research into the premium foodservice and tourism context of five-star hotels. From a practical perspective, the findings suggest that five-star hotels need to secure quality competitiveness, develop health-oriented menus, offer diverse product compositions, enhance purchase convenience, and establish reasonable pricing strategies when developing and operating HMR products. In addition, this study is meaningful in that it emphasizes the need for marketing strategies that effectively connect trust and positive images of hotel brands with HMR products in order to enhance customers’ purchase attitude and continuous purchase intention.
