나아가 본 연구는 악곡 분석 결과를 바탕으로 보웬의 피아노 저서인 『The Simplicity of Piano Technique』와 『Pedalling the Modern Pianoforte』를 참고하여 작품에 적용 가능한 연주 방안을 제시하였다.

Even amidst the turbulent modernist wave of the early 20th century, when atonal music was expanding, York Bowen (1884–1961) firmly adhered to classical traditions and the tonal system. For this reason, he is often categorized as a conservative composer; however, his masterpiece, Piano Sonata No. 5, Op. 72 (1923), is a highly original work that perfectly fuses the virtuosic textures of late Romanticism with the colorful harmonic idioms of Impressionism within a strict structural framework.
The analysis reveals that the principal introductory motive presented in the first movement reappears in the coda of the third movement, creating a cyclic structure that organically connects the movements and reinforces the work’s overall structural unity. Harmonically, while maintaining f minor as the tonal center, Bowen expands the scope of functional harmony through the frequent use of augmented-sixth chords, ninth chords, and chromatic progressions, thereby producing rich and colorful sonorities. In particular, the coexistence of Late Romantic harmonic language and Impressionistic coloristic effects emerges as a prominent characteristic of the work. From a rhythmic perspective, the continuous use of asymmetrical 5/8 mixed meter throughout the second movement generates a fluid and dynamic rhythmic flow.
Furthermore, based on the preceding analytical results, this study proposes practical performance methods applicable to this work by connecting Bowen’s own treatises, The Simplicity of Piano Technique and Pedalling the Modern Pianoforte. Specifically, it examines interpretative approaches concerning the treatment of polyphonic textures, the realization of sonority through pedaling, the expression of asymmetrical rhythms, and strategies for overcoming technical challenges on performance. Through this investigation, the study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the musical characteristics of Piano Sonata No. 5, Op. 72 and to offer practical guidance for performance interpretation, thereby contributing to a renewed appreciation of the artistic and scholarly significance of Bowen’s piano music.
