This study examines Piano Sonata, a solo piano work composed in 1934 by the Polish composer Witold Lutosławski (1913-1994), with the aim of identifying the stylistic characteristics of his early compositional language. As one of Lutosławski's relatively representative large-scale solo piano works from his early period, Piano Sonata retains the fundamental framework and structural awareness of the traditional sonata genre. At the same time, it reveals the composer's early exploration of harmony, rhythm, texture, and sound treatment, which gives the work significant scholarly value.
Using score analysis as its primary research method, this study systematically investigates the three movements of Piano Sonata, focusing on formal structure, melodic progression, harmonic language, texture, and rhythmic organization. The analysis shows that, although this work belongs to Lutosławski's early period, it already demonstrates relatively distinctive individual tendencies in several aspects, including polyphonic writing, contrapuntal texture, tonal fluidity, non-functional harmonic progression, and the layered organization of rhythm. These elements not only shape the overall sonorous character of the work but also play an important role in the structural development of each movement and in the formation of musical tension.
In addition, this study takes into account the relationship between analysis and performance by selecting and discussing several representative passages from the work. Through a more concrete examination of voice relationships, structural features, and methods of sound treatment, the study seeks to provide foundational materials that may contribute to a deeper understanding of the work and to performance interpretation.
This study argues that Piano Sonata is an important work for understanding Lutosławski's early creative world and also offers meaningful clues for examining the subsequent development of his musical language.
Furthermore, it is hoped that this study will serve as a basic reference for further research on Lutosławski's early piano works, which have not yet received sufficient scholarly attention.
