This study scores the climate risk response levels of Korean listed companies based on the 11 recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and analyzes their impact on firm value. The sample consists of 273 constituents of the MSCI Korea IMI index with sufficient data. The analysis utilizes corporate disclosure materials, including sustainability reports, TCFD reports, and business reports, alongside MSCI Climate Change Metrics and FnGuide financial data. The climate risk response score was constructed using two metrics: a binary scale (CS_Binary) measuring the mere presence of disclosure, and a 3-point parallel scale (CS_Quality) reflecting the qualitative level of the disclosure. Firm value was measured using the natural logarithm of Tobin's Q. A multiple regression analysis controlling for firm size, profitability, leverage, growth, and industry dummies was conducted, applying HC3 robust standard errors to account for heteroskedasticity.
The findings of the analysis are as follows. First, the comprehensive climate risk response score exhibited a weak positive (+) effect on firm value across both scales. Although the magnitude and statistical significance of the effect were modest, the directionality remained consistent regardless of the measurement metric. This aligns with the existing pattern where the direction matches the positive (+) relationships reported in prior international studies, but the statistical significance appears weaker within the Korean market. Second, the impact of the 11 detailed indicators on firm value varied varied across indicators. Short-, medium-, and long-term response targets in the strategy domain demonstrated the strongest positive (+) correlation. Significant associations were confirmed for indicators containing specific, measurable information, such as greenhouse gas emissions management, target setting, and dedicated climate committees. Conversely, no significance was observed in the narrative disclosures regarding risk management processes.
Third, additional analyses revealed that the positive (+) effect was concentrated in small-cap cohorts characterized by high information asymmetry and low-carbon industry groups facing relatively low regulatory pressure. This is consistent with the predictions of signaling theory, suggesting that high-quality voluntary disclosures can serve as a differentiating signal for firms in weak information environments. Fourth, alternative analyses replacing the dependent variable with accounting profitability (ROA) and the subsequent year's firm value yielded no significant results, indicating that the findings of this study should be interpreted as a conditional association rather than a strict causal relationship.
This study is significant as it departs from conventional approaches that rely on single scores from external rating agencies or aggregate emissions data. Instead, it applies an evaluation framework to the Korean market that specifies TCFD recommendations into detailed indicators and incorporates qualitative differentiation. Furthermore, by empirically showing that the financial materiality of non-financial information varies across specific items and firm cohorts, this study provides practical implications. It highlights the necessity for a strategic disclosure approach wherein companies prioritize resource allocation to key indicators to which the market is sensitive, and underscores the need for policy support to enhance the disclosure capabilities of small-cap firms.
