The introduction of next-generation mobile communication technologies is accelerating the expansion of large-scale communication environments, with demands for low latency and ultra-connectivity in diverse application fields such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET), and Internet of Drones (IoD). To overcome the limitations of existing centralized RAN architectures, such as non- interoperability, the Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN), which supports hardware and software interoperability between different vendors, is establishing itself as the next generation RAN. Open RAN, led by O-RAN Alliance, has released standards addressing potential threats to the Open RAN framework and the requirements for countermeasures. The published standards identify Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attacks as one of the security threats targeting an E2 interface on Open RAN and specify the use of IPsec as a core security control measure against such attacks. However, as a layer 3 security protocol, IPsec still allows layer 2 attacks such as Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) spoofing. Therefore, this thesis simulates the feasibility of ARP spoofing—one type of MitM attack—in an Open RAN environment and implements an E2 protection xApp to protect the exposed E2 interface against such layer 2 attacks. The E2 protection xApp is designed to utilize a static ARP cache function in small-scale environments and a dynamic ARP spoofing monitoring function in large-scale environments, depending on the scale of the Open RAN environment. Furthermore, it analyzes functional comparisons and performance evaluations to demonstrate that the implemented E2 protection xApp outperforms existing ARP spoofing mitigation solutions and methods and presents analysis results to prove the network resilience of this xApp.
