Corporate ESG greenwashing—the persistent gap between firms’ symbolic ESG communication and their substantive ESG performance—has emerged as a central gov- ernance concern amid the rapid expansion of global ESG disclosure and China’s com- pressed transition toward mandatory sustainability reporting. Yet the existing literature remains organized around two competing and largely disconnected perspectives: the “curb view,”which treats external actors as governance mechanisms that discipline firms toward substantive improvement, and the “catalyze view,” which treats them as pressure sources that incentivize symbolic compliance. Combined with a dominant reliance on net-effect regression logic, this disconnection has left the transmission channels, joint effects, and contextual boundaries of external governance insufficiently understood. This dissertation develops a pressure–governance perspective that reframes the curb–catalyze debate as a theoretically tractable question about the functional roles ex- ternal forces play under different governance configurations. Drawing on and extending Fraud Triangle Theory, the framework conceptualizes five external forces—government attention, social media attention, analyst coverage, institutional ownership, and audit quality—as forces whose governance consequences depend on their interaction with in- ternal governance capacity. Using a sample of Chinese A-share listed firms over 2009– 2024, the study integrates panel regression analysis with dynamic qualitative compara- tive analysis (dynamic QCA) to examine the directional, transmission, contextual, and configurational effects of external forces on greenwashing. The empirical findings yield three interrelated patterns. First, government atten- tion, social media attention, and institutional ownership amplify greenwashing, whereas analyst coverage and audit quality restrain it. Second, pressure-related forces operate primarily through financing constraints, reputational pressure, and managerial myopia, while governance-related forces operate through strengthened information disclosure transparency and internal control. Third, configurational analysis uncovers a context- dependent duality, in which analyst coverage and institutional ownership function as disciplinary forces under sound governance environments but transform into pressure amplifiers under weak ones; and a weakest-link logic, in which CEO–chair separation and credible external auditing jointly serve as necessary baseline conditions across all low-greenwashing configurations and are systematically absent together across all high- greenwashing configurations. This dissertation contributes to the literature in three ways. Conceptually, it de- velops a pressure–governance perspective that integrates the curb–catalyze debate and extends Fraud Triangle Theory through the configurational interdependence of pressure and opportunity. Methodologically, it demonstrates the complementarity of panel re- gression and dynamic QCA, offering a transferable template for research on corporate misconduct. Empirically, it documents the context-dependent duality and weakest-link logic of external monitoring, revising the conventional assumption that external gover- nance exerts stable, context-independent effects. The findings suggest that understanding ESG greenwashing requires moving beyond single-factor thinking toward an integrative view in which external forces, internal governance, and contextual conditions constitute a broader governance ecology—a conclusion with relevance to both Chinese regulatory reform and the broader study of corporate sustainability behavior.
