This study aims to examine the effects of HMD (Head-Mounted Display)-based K-pop VR concert viewing experiences on fans’ idol loyalty. As the global K-pop fandom has expanded in recent years, overseas fans have experienced temporal, spatial, and economic constraints in directly participating in offline concerts. In this context, HMD-based VR concerts have attracted attention as a new form of concert consumption that allows fans to experience performances in a virtual space while providing immersion and presence. Therefore, based on the Value-Based Adoption Model (VAM), this study empirically analyzes how the key experiential factors of HMD-based K-pop VR concerts, namely immersion and presence, influence perceived benefits, perceived sacrifices, perceived value, and idol loyalty.
This study conducted an online survey of Chinese fans who had experience watching HMD-based K-pop VR concerts between February 10, 2026,
and March 9, 2026. A total of 356 questionnaires were collected. After excluding 67 responses that were considered unreliable due to excessively short response times, 289 valid responses were used for the final analysis. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 27.0 and AMOS 24.0. Reliability analysis, correlation analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling, and mediation effect analysis were conducted.
The results of the analysis are as follows. First, immersion and presence were found to have significant positive effects on perceived enjoyment. This means that the higher the level of immersion and presence experienced by viewers in an HMD-based K-pop VR concert environment, the more enjoyable they perceive the content to be. Second, immersion and presence did not have significant effects on perceived cost or visual fatigue. This suggests that the sensory and experiential factors of VR concerts may not directly influence sacrifice-related factors such as cost burden or physiological fatigue. Third, perceived enjoyment had a significant positive effect on perceived value, while perceived cost had a significant negative effect on perceived value. In contrast, visual fatigue did not have a significant effect on perceived value. Fourth, perceived value was found to have a significant positive effect on idol loyalty. Lastly, the mediation effect analysis showed that presence indirectly influenced idol loyalty through perceived enjoyment and perceived value, whereas immersion did not show a significant mediation effect through the same path. In addition, perceived value was found to play a significant mediating role in the relationship between perceived cost and idol loyalty.
This study has academic significance in that it applies VAM to the context of HMD-based K-pop VR concerts and explains the formation process of perceived value and idol loyalty by incorporating immersion and presence as key experiential factors of VR content. In particular, the finding that presence influences idol loyalty through perceived enjoyment and perceived value indicates that the experience of feeling as if one is actually present at a concert venue can play an important role in forming fandom loyalty.
From a practical perspective, the findings suggest that K-pop VR concert platforms and content planners need to design services in ways that strengthen viewers’ presence and enjoyment while reducing their perceived cost burden.
