Sonate pour piano (1947–1948) by Henri Paul Julien Dutilleux (1916–2013), one of the leading composers of twentieth-century French music, is regarded as a representative work in which traditional formal structures and modern musical language are organically integrated. It marks a significant turning point in the formation of Dutilleux’s distinctive musical style. At the same time, the work reflects the tension between tradition and modernity that characterized the postwar French musical landscape, while demonstrating the composer’s characteristic color-oriented harmonic language and structural thinking.
The purpose of this study is to examine Dutilleux’s musical world through an analysis of the Sonate pour piano and to investigate the characteristics of his musical thought and compositional style. To this end, the study first explores the composer’s life and historical background, examining the historical and aesthetic contexts in which his musical language was formed. It then outlines the principal features of Dutilleux’s music, including progressive growth, the use of pivot notes and central chords, color-oriented harmonic organization, the structuring of timbre and texture, and the influence of literature and visual arts.
Furthermore, the three movements of the Sonate pour piano are analyzed with particular attention to formal structure, motivic development, harmonic language, rhythmic organization, and timbral characteristics. Special emphasis is placed on the techniques of progressive growth and non-functional harmonic structures that permeate the work, in order to examine how Dutilleux reinterprets traditional forms within a modern musical language.
By providing an integrated examination of Dutilleux’s musical language from the perspectives of form, harmony, and timbre, this study aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of twentieth-century French contemporary music and to offer insights into the interpretation and performance of piano works.
