The adoption of event self-service technologies (ESTs), such as mobile apps and self-check-in systems, has transformed how attendees interact with and experience events. Understanding attendees’ evaluations of EST usage has become increasingly important. This study examines attendees’ perceptions of EST usage and its influence on experiential and behavioral outcomes within the context of event tourism. This study develops and examines the Tech-based Expectation–Confirmation Theory (TECT) framework by extending Expectation–Confirmation Theory (ECT) to the context of EST-assisted events.
A three-phase mixed-method research design was employed. Phase 1 involved conceptual development via a literature review. Phase 2 employed qualitative in-depth interviews with 20 EST-experienced event attendees in order to generate and refine the measurement items. Phase 3 involved a questionnaire survey among Chinese event attendees with prior EST usage experience, which yielded 405 valid responses for the data analysis. Exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, partial least squares structural equation modelling, and fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) were employed for the data analysis.
The findings reveal that attendees’ expectation (perceived advantages, perceived constraints) and evaluations of EST performance (convenience, privacy, functionality, smartness, usability, and support) significantly influence confirmation (EST using experience, EST-assisted event experience), satisfaction, and continuance intentions (continue to use EST, continue to attend EST-assisted event), even though the specific effects among the sub-dimensions vary. Furthermore, the fsQCA findings reveal that multiple configurations of EST-related conditions can generate positive experiential outcomes and demonstrate the configurational complexity of EST-assisted experiences.
The study theoretically contributes by extending ECT into the event tourism context via the proposed TECT framework and integrating both linear and configurational perspectives of EST usage. Practically, the findings offer insights for event organizers and technology providers regarding the design and management of EST-assisted event experiences. The study also acknowledges several limitations while providing directions for future research on event technology adoption.
