Charles-Valentin Alkan was a French-Jewish pianist and composer active during the height of the Romantic era, and the majority of his works were composed for the piano. In the field of piano composition, he is regarded as a figure comparable to Franz Liszt(1811-1886), Frédéric Chopin(1810-1849), Robert Schumann(1810-1856), and Johannes Brahms(1833-1897), and he occupies an important position in the history of Western piano music.
Alkan established an original and innovative musical language in piano composition, expanding the conventional boundaries of harmonic, contrapuntal, melodic, and structural writing, as well as the use of musical color. His novel and distinctive compositional style provided new inspiration for later composers and exerted a profound influence on the development of late Romantic music and the creative practices of subsequent generations.
The subject of this study is Alkan’s Grande Sonate ‘Les Quatre Âges’ Op. 33, a work composed during his creative maturation period (1844–1850). This study systematically analyzes the work from the perspectives of compositional background, formal structure, tonality and harmony, musical materials, and performance techniques. The findings indicate that each movement of the sonata possesses an independent title and depicts different musical characters corresponding to stages of life from the ages of twenty to fifty. Furthermore, the work departs from the traditional tempo arrangement of the sonata genre and portrays various stages of human life through its four movements, thereby revealing a pronounced programmatic and philosophical character.
The work demonstrates a high degree of originality in its tonal design and use of chromatic harmonic language, while maintaining organic unity throughout the composition through thematic transformation and motivic development. In addition, Alkan actively employs symphonic approaches to piano writing, including polyphonic textures, octave writing, and fugal techniques, thereby realizing an exceptionally demanding level of virtuosity. At the same time, the work reflects the aesthetic transition of Romantic music from external virtuosity toward inner spiritual expression.
In this respect, the sonata combines rigorous structural organization with profound philosophical introspection, establishing its important artistic value and scholarly significance within the repertoire of Romantic piano literature.
