국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 호주 현대음악을 대표하는 작곡가 칼 바인（Carl Vine, 1954– ） 의 피아노 소나타 3번（Piano Sonata No.3, 2007）을 중심으로 그의 음악 세계 와 작곡 양식을 고찰하고, 작품에 나타나는 구조적·리듬적·화성적 특징을 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 칼 바인은 현대주의 작곡 기법과 역동적인 리듬 어법, 그리고 다층적 텍스처를 결합한 독자적 음악 언어를 구축한 작곡가로 평가되며, 특히 네 곡의 피아노 소나타를 통해 현대 피아노 문헌에 중요한 기여를 남겼다.
본 연구에서는 먼저 칼 바인의 생애와 음악적 배경을 고찰하고, 그의 창 작 특징과 주요 작품 세계를 정리하였다. 이어 피아노 소나타 3번의 전체 구조를 바탕으로 각 악장의 형식, 동기 전개 방식, 박자 전조（metric modulation）, 리듬 구조, 화성과 텍스처의 사용 양상을 중심으로 분석하였다. 특히 본 작품은 불규칙한 리듬 분할과 복합 박자 구조, 확장된 조성 （extended tonality）, 다층적 음향 조직을 통해 강한 추진력과 긴장감을 형성 하고 있으며, 이러한 요소들이 작품 전반의 통일성과 유기성을 이끌고 있음 을 확인하였다.
분석 결과, 피아노 소나타 3번은 전통적 소나타 개념을 현대적으로 확장 한 작품으로, 리듬 중심의 구조 형성과 동기의 순환적 변형을 통해 독창적 인 음악적 서사를 구축하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 무용 음악 및 다장 르 협업 경험에서 비롯된 신체적 리듬감과 에너지의 흐름이 작품 전반에 반영되어 있으며, 이는 바인의 음악 세계를 특징짓는 중요한 요소로 작용한 다.
결론적으로 본 작품은 현대 호주 피아노 음악의 대표적 성과이자, 21세기 현대 피아노 레퍼토리에서 중요한 예술적·교육적 가치를 지닌 작품이라 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 칼 바인의 음악 양식과 현대 피아노 작곡 기법에 대한 이해를 심화시키는 데 기여할 뿐만 아니라, 향후 현대 피아노 작품의 연주 해석 및 교육 연구를 위한 기초 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

This study examines Piano Sonata No.3 （2007） by the Australian composer Carl Vine （1954– ） and investigates his musical language and compositional style through an analysis of the work’s structural, rhythmic, and harmonic characteristics. Carl Vine is regarded as a composer who has established a distinctive musical language by combining modernist compositional techniques, dynamic rhythmic expression, and multi-layered textures. In particular, his four piano sonatas have made a significant contribution to contemporary piano literature.
This study first explores Carl Vine’s life, musical background, compositional characteristics, and major works. It then analyzes Piano Sonata No.3 with a focus on its overall structure, formal organization, motivic development, metric modulation, rhythmic construction, harmonic and textural characteristics.
The analysis reveals that Piano Sonata No.3 creates strong momentum and tension through irregular rhythmic subdivisions, complex metric structures, extended tonality, and multi-layered sonic organization. These elements contribute to the overall unity and organic coherence of the work. Furthermore, the sonata may be understood as a contemporary expansion of the traditional sonata concept, constructing a distinctive musical narrative through rhythm-centered formal processes and cyclical motivic transformation.
The study also demonstrates that the sense of physical rhythm and energetic flow derived from Vine’s experience in dance music and interdisciplinary collaborations is reflected throughout the composition and serves as an important characteristic of his musical language.
In conclusion, Piano Sonata No.3 represents a significant achievement in contemporary Australian piano music and possesses important artistic and educational value within twenty-first-century piano repertoire. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of Carl Vine’s compositional style and contemporary piano compositional techniques, while also providing a foundation for future studies in performance interpretation and music education related to contemporary piano works.
