This dissertation examines Bohuslav Martinů’s (1890–1959) piano work Préludes pour piano, H. 181, focusing on the aspects of form, melody, harmony, and rhythm found in the work. Based on this analysis, the study aims to consider Martinů’s piano idiom during his Paris period.
Préludes pour piano is a piano work composed in 1929, during Martinů’s Paris period, and published in 1930. It consists of eight short preludes. Each piece bears a different title—Blues, Scherzo, Andante, Danse, Capriccio, Largo, Étude, and Fox-Trot—and presents distinct characters and genre-related images within the broader framework of the prelude. Rather than simply imitating these genre elements, Martinů transforms them within his own rhythmic sensibility and pianistic idiom.
This study first examines Martinů’s life and the creative background of his Paris period, and then outlines the neoclassical tendencies, the reception of jazz idioms, and the rhythm-centered thinking found in his musical style. It then analyzes the eight pieces of Préludes pour piano in terms of form, melody, harmony, and rhythm.
The analysis shows that this work presents diverse characters and sonorities in a condensed manner within a concise musical framework. Formally, each piece has a relatively concise structure, and the short movements create contrast with one another while being connected within a single suite-like framework. Melodically, short melodic units, registral contrast, and leaping motion are prominent. Harmonically, triads and chordal clusters are used, while dissonant sonorities and harmonic ambiguity combine to create modern tonal color. Rhythmically, syncopation, irregular accents, ostinato, and dance-like rhythmic patterns function as important elements that generate momentum and tension.
In this way, Préludes pour piano is a work that presents neoclassical formal clarity, jazz-influenced and dance-like rhythmic idioms, and a modern harmonic sensibility within a concise formal structure. The work also demonstrates how the various musical elements Martinů absorbed during his Paris period are transformed and combined within short piano pieces. Therefore, it may be regarded as a meaningful work for understanding Martinů’s piano idiom during his Paris period.
