This study is an in-depth analysis of the piano variations "Variations on Balkan Themes" (Op. 60) by Amy Beach (1867-1944), the first internationally renowned female composer from the United States. At the end of the 19th century, American society was deeply influenced by the moral idealism advocated by Victorianism, which imposed many restrictions on women's social activities and artistic creation. Despite being in such a historical context, Beach established a unique musical position with his outstanding piano playing and composition talents. With the support and encouragement of her husband, she gradually established her reputation and influence as a composer. After his death, she made important contributions to improving the creative environment for female musicians and promoting the cultivation of female musical talents by promoting the establishment of the Beach Club and leading the creation of the Society of American Women Composers.
Based on the investigation of Amy Beach's life experience, this study divides her creative career into three stages: early, middle, and late, and systematically explores the musical characteristics and stylistic evolution of her works in each period. Her early works reflect the distinctive flashy features of late Romantic style; Mid term works combine ethnic folk melodies with romantic music vocabulary by absorbing and utilizing diverse folk music materials, showcasing a unique artistic personality; Late works integrate impressionist creative techniques with American ethnic music colors, presenting a more diverse and mature musical language feature.
On the basis of the above theoretical research, this article conducts an in-depth and detailed analysis of the representative work of the middle period, "Variations on Balkan Themes" (Op. 60), according to the development order of the structure of the work. This work is a Character Variation composed based on the melodies of four Balkan folk songs, sourced from the folk songs "O Maiko Moya", "Stara Planina", "Nasadil e Dado", and "Macedonia". The work takes the tragic color contained in "O Maiko Moya" as its core theme, and develops and varies the theme through various compositional techniques such as canon, dotted rhythm, and barcarroll style. At the same time, with the introduction and application of the melodies of three other folk songs, including "Stara Planina," "Nasadil e Dado," and "Macedonia," the suffering, sorrow and indomitable national spirit of the Balkan people are expressed. Finally, the work achieves structural unity and integrity throughout the entire piece through unique development techniques in the cadenza and coda, as well as presenting the theme prototype again.
