Roads are essential social infrastructure that constitute the national transportation network, and their continuous functionality and safety must be maintained. However, due to increasing traffic loads, long-term service, and abnormal climate conditions, various risk such as pavement damages and underground cavities may occur in road pavements and subsurface layers. These risk can lead to casualties and property damage. Therefore, technologies capable of rapidly detecting and managing such risk factors at an early stage are required. Conventional pavement and subsurface investigations often rely on visual judgment and the experience of inspectors, which may result in subjective assessments, increased analysis time, and limitations in investigating areas with restricted access.
In this study, an AI-based detection system was developed to automatically detect major risk factors, including pavement distress and underground cavities, using road pavement images and GPR data that reflect domestic field conditions. For pavement damages detection, a detection system capable of both real-time and precise detection was proposed by utilizing front-view camera images and rear line-scan images acquired from an inspection vehicle. In addition, a damage grading criterion based on detection confidence and damage size was proposed to support maintenance prioritization. For underground cavity detection, B-scan and C-scan detection results from multi-channel GPR data were fused to calculate cavity-suspected probability and provide quantitative decision-making information for prioritizing candidate areas with a high likelihood of actual cavities.
This study has three main contributions.. First, an AI-based detection system was developed to automatically detect pavement distress and underground cavities using road pavement images and GPR data. Second, the proposed system was evaluated using investigation data acquired from actual domestic road environments, thereby examining its applicability under real field conditions rather than limited experimental settings. Third, the detection results were extended beyond simple object detection outputs into quantitative indicators, such as detection confidence, damage size, and cavity-suspected probability, which can be used for maintenance decision-making. Accordingly, the proposed technology is expected to contribute to improving the objectivity and efficiency of road facility inspection and maintenance practices.
