Adolf von Henselt, a famous pianist and composer of the Romantic era in the 19th century (1814-1889), integrated the rich emotions peculiar to Romanticism with the balanced forms of Classicism, occupying an important position in the history of piano music. However, compared with contemporary famous composers such as Chopin (Fryderyk Chopin) and Liszt (Franz Liszt), Henselt's works are relatively lacking in academic research, and their unique artistic value has not been fully realized. His early masterpiece, "12 Salon Etudes, Op. 5," published in 1837, was a work born against the backdrop of the flourishing Romantic music and salon culture in the 19th century. Based on the lyricism and popularity of salon music, the work organically combines exquisite piano performance techniques with professional musicality. Therefore, "Op. 5" is not only regarded as one of the representative works of Romantic salon etudes but also the unique compositional style of Henselt and the overall characteristics of 19th-century Romantic piano music are of great significance for understanding its core research value.
This study examines Op. 5 through a combination of bibliographic research, musical analysis, performance practice analysis, and comparative methodology, investigating Henselt's biography and musical career alongside the compositional background and stylistic tendencies of the work. On this basis, the study analyzes its compositional features across four dimensions — formal structure, harmonic language, melodic construction, and textural design — and systematically examines the core performance techniques required for its interpretation, including dynamic control, scale and arpeggio execution, touch differentiation, wide-interval voicing, chord playing, long-range leap management, and polyphonic voice balancing. Representative passages from all twelve études are analyzed to propose concrete performance strategies and to illuminate the organic relationship between compositional characteristics and performance practice. In doing so, the study aims to provide foundational reference material on Henselt's piano works — a body of repertoire that has received comparatively little scholarly attention in the Korean academic context — and to furnish resources applicable to future research, performance, and pedagogical practice.
The research results show that Henselt's Op. 5 is a work that organically combines the formal beauty of classicism with the lyrical nature of romanticism. Based on the elegance and lyricism of salon music, it showcases Henselt's unique piano playing style. This work is based on classical structures such as sonata form, compound sonata form, rondo form, etc., while using colorful harmonic vocabulary, melodic richness, and texture to effectively express romanticism. In addition, techniques such as dynamic contrast, scales and arpeggios, fingerings, wide range, chord playing, long jumps, and polyphonic treatment are not just simple technical elements but the core means to achieve the emotional flow and musical expression of the work. As mentioned above, Op. 5 is a masterpiece that embodies Henselt's creative characteristics and playing techniques, and is an important case to prove the artistic, educational, and performance value of romantic salon etudes.
