    Abstract
Since the twentieth century, the fusion of Chinese and Western music in Chinese musical composition has remained an important issue in the development of modern music. It concerns not only how Chinese composers absorb and transform Western modern compositional experience, but also how traditional musical resources are reorganized within a modern context and further developed into a musical language with a strong sense of subjectivity. Although previous studies have accumulated considerable achievements in historical review, cultural comparison, and case analysis, they still lack a relatively systematic theoretical refinement regarding how the fusion of Chinese and Western music is truly realized within musical works, what kinds of relational differences exist among various fusion works, and by what standards such works should be evaluated. On this basis, this study takes the fusion of Chinese and Western music in Chinese musical composition since the twentieth century as its object of inquiry. Drawing on theoretical comparison, historical investigation, and case analysis, it seeks to summarize and interpret this issue from three dimensions: paths of fusion, modes of fusion, and dimensions of evaluation.
This study first compares the deeper differences between Chinese and Western music in terms of compositional concepts, pitch concepts, rhythmic consciousness, and structural thinking, and points out that the fusion of Chinese and Western music is not a simple juxtaposition of Chinese elements and Western techniques, but rather a dynamic process in which different musical logics continuously establish, adjust, and reorganize their relationships within a work. Secondly, through an examination of the developmental trajectory of Chinese musical composition since the twentieth century, this study argues that the fusion of Chinese and Western music has broadly undergone four stages: technique borrowing, nationalized practice, the formation of a new musical grammar, and cross-cultural dialogue. This process reveals a developmental trend moving gradually from the integration of surface materials toward the construction of deeper sonic concepts, structural concepts, and cultural subjectivity.
In the case analysis section, this study selects Zhu Jian'er's Symphony No. 10, Jiang Xue and Tan Dun's Map as representative works. Jiang Xue demonstrates the structural transformation of traditional Chinese aesthetic spirit within a modern symphonic context through the composite organization of guqin, chant-like recitation, serial materials, and symphonic sonority. Map, by contrast, advances the fusion of Chinese and Western music to the level of media dialogue and the reconstruction of modes of cultural presence through its cross-temporal and cross-spatial organization of local sounds, modern media, and live concerto performance. These two case studies show that the depth of Chinese-Western musical fusion does not depend on the quantity of national elements employed, but on whether sound resources from different origins can form genuine, effective, and organically unified relationships within the work.
On this basis, this study proposes that the fusion of Chinese and Western music is mainly realized through five dimensions: pitch, rhythm, timbre, structure, and media/presentation, and that it may be summarized into several dominant modes, including symbolic suggestion, grammatical integration, conceptual reconstruction, and media dialogue. At the same time, the evaluation of fusion works should not remain at the level of material identification or stylistic classification, but should instead comprehensively consider the effectiveness of material organization, the unity of structural generation, the depth of cultural translation, the distinctiveness of subjective style, and the potential of auditory experience and reception. In this sense, the fusion of Chinese and Western music is not only an important phenomenon in the history of modern Chinese music, but also a crucial path through which contemporary Chinese music continually reorganizes traditional experience and constructs cultural subjectivity.
