This thesis develops, validates and applies a fusion framework that combines NASA Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) spaceborne LiDAR with European Space Agency Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery for three-dimensional analysis of post-fire forest recovery in South Korean temperate forests. The framework predicts canopy height (RH95) and aboveground biomass density (AGBD) at 10–20 m resolution across the Korean peninsula, anchored in a quality- controlled training set of 1,110,072 GEDI L2A footprints (RH95) and 1,889,379 GEDI L4A footprints (AGBD), drawn from the April 2019 – April 2024 archive. Two LightGBM gradient-boosted regressors are trained under a strict K-Means K = 5 spatial cross-validation scheme: 740,907 training records for RH95 and 1,889,379 for AGBD. The trained models are applied across three Korean fire sites that span distinct fire regimes: the Uljin–Samcheok megafire of March 2022 (20,923 ha by Korea Forest Service official figures, 28,217 ha by dNBR perimeter), the Goseong-Sokcho fire of April 2019 (1,267 ha; 4,841 ha dNBR), and the Jirisan fire of March 2025 (1,557 ha; 15,988 ha dNBR). Monthly wall-to-wall structural maps are produced over a T-offset framework spanning T−12 to T+9 months around each fire date (twenty-two analytical layers per site, with three additional layers retained for sensitivity testing). Pixel-wise spectral recovery (RecNBR) and structural recovery (RecRH95) ratios are then contrasted through the Spectral Divergence Index (SDI = RecNBR − RecRH95) to map and quantify the Two-Dimensional Spectral Illusion: the systematic phenomenon by which optical greenness recovers while three- dimensional structure remains far below pre-fire levels. The trained models reach R² = 0.581 on independent test footprints for RH95 and R² = 0.370 for AGBD, both substantially above global benchmarks evaluated on the same Korean test set. Twelve months after fire, 14.4% of burned Pinus densiflora pixels and 18.1% of burned Quercus pixels at Uljin display SDI 〉 0.20; corresponding fractions at Goseong-Sokcho are 24.2% (Pinus) and 34.9% (Quercus), and at Jirisan 9.0% (Pinus) and 11.8% (Quercus). These results demonstrate that Sentinel-2 alone systematically overstates post-fire forest recovery in Korean temperate forests. The findings have direct implications for forest monitoring under the Republic of Korea's 2050 carbon-neutrality commitment, for REDD+ measurement, reporting and verification, and for the Digital Saemaul Undong policy framework.

Keywords : GEDI, Sentinel-2, post-fire recovery, Korean temperate forests, Two- Dimensional Spectral Illusion, LightGBM, Spectral Divergence Index, Pinus densiflora, Quercus, Uljin megafire, spatial cross-validation.
