Rapid urban expansion across Java's metropolitan regions has intensified Urban Heat Island (UHI) effects, yet comprehensive spatiotemporal analyses examining how urban growth and thermal dynamics co-evolve across different metropolitan systems remain limited. This study investigates the spatiotemporal evolution of UHI and its relationship with urban expansion across seven metropolitan regions in Java from 2015 to 2024. Emerging Hot Spot Analysis (EHSA) was employed to identify spatiotemporal patterns of UHI dynamics, while the Spatial Coupling Index (SCI) and GeoDetector were used to examine the relationship between urban expansion and thermal change. K-Means clustering was subsequently applied to identify metropolitan typologies based on urban-thermal characteristics. The results show that built-up area increased across six of the seven metropolitan regions, with net gains ranging from 1.47 to 15.14 percentage points. Thermal hotspot dynamics varied substantially in their spatial configuration and temporal evolution. Strong to very strong spatial coupling between built-up growth and UHI dynamics was observed across all metropolitan regions, indicating a close spatial correspondence between urban expansion and thermal change. However, the explanatory power of built-up area on spatial temperature variation differed considerably among regions. Metropolitan regions experiencing concentrated urban growth exhibited stronger urban–thermal relationships, whereas regions characterized by more extensive thermal hotspot development exhibited weaker explanatory power despite more severe UHI conditions. Three metropolitan typologies were identified: lowland thermally stressed metropolises, highland thermally buffered metropolises, and high-expansion UHI consolidation metropolises. These findings provide a spatiotemporal analytical framework for understanding urban–thermal co-evolution and support the development of metropolitan-specific heat mitigation strategies in rapidly urbanizing regions.
