This study adopts “relation–transformation” as its central methodological framework and examines the structural logic of Neo-Riemannian Theory and its potential for cross-cultural analysis. It aims to evaluate the explanatory power of the theory in Western post-tonal and tonally ambiguous music, and to further explore its applicability to the Chinese traditional scalar system. Pitch-Class Set Theory serves as the structural medium of the study, through which an analytical framework is constructed based on the principles of common-tone retention and parsimonious voice leading, integrating Western harmonic transformation logic with the organizational characteristics of Chinese traditional scales.
The study first provides a systematic review of the theoretical origins and developmental trajectory of Neo-Riemannian Theory. It focuses on triadic transformations (P, L, and R) and their representations in spatial models, and further addresses generalized transformations at the level of seventh chords. In doing so, it demonstrates how the theory has evolved from triadic relational analysis into a relational analytical system capable of interpreting tonal ambiguity, chromatic progressions, and non-functional harmonic structures.
On this basis, the study incorporates Chinese traditional pentatonic and heptatonic scales into a comparative framework. Drawing on concepts such asTongjun Sangongand modal transference (Yigong Fandiao), it examines structural symmetry, mechanisms of tonal center shift, and principles of pitch organization within the Chinese scalar system. Through pitch-class set representation and subset analysis, the study argues that Chinese traditional scales are not merely collections of melodic materials, but dynamic pitch organizations characterized by structural constraints, transformational potential, and internal connectivity. This provides a foundation for extending Neo-Riemannian analytical concepts into a non-Western context.
In the case studies, the selected works include Richard Strauss’sIm Abendrot, the Prelude to Richard Wagner’sTristan und Isolde, Huang Huwei’sRongcheng Spring Outskirts, and Jia Daqun’sEight Poems of Autumn I. The analysis shows that complex harmonic surfaces in Western works can be reduced to underlying transformational pathways with internal coherence, while in Chinese works, transitions between modal systems and scalar structures similarly exhibit structural continuity based on the retention of common tones. Such processes demonstrate a logic comparable to the principle of parsimonious transformation.
The study concludes that the significance of Neo-Riemannian Theory lies not only in explaining harmonic relations in Western music, but more importantly in its “relational structural thinking,” which transcends the limitations of functional harmony by focusing on structural mapping, continuous transformation, and locally optimal connections. The originality of this research lies in extending Neo-Riemannian Theory from Western harmonic transformation analysis to the structural analysis of Chinese traditional scales, and in establishing structural correspondences between the two systems through the mediating role of Pitch-Class Set Theory, thereby proposing a unified analytical approach with cross-cultural explanatory power.
