Abstract
The purpose of this study is to reflect on the boundary confusion experienced by the researcher, a trainee art therapist, in a clinical setting through autoethnographic narrative inquiry, and to explore the process of forming a therapeutic self, centered on Nietzsche's three stages of metamorphosis. The researcher reconstructed her life history, starting from the burnout,
countertransference, and boundary confusion experienced while working at a day care center for individuals with developmental disabilities.
As a research method, Clandinin and Connelly's narrative inquiry was applied.
Data - including counseling and analysis records, reflective journals, and artwork produced from 2022 to 2026-were collected as field texts and reconstructed within a three-dimensional space, with Nietzsche's three stages of metamorphosis
(Camel, Lion, and Child) utilized as the core framework for data interpretation.
The findings are as follows. First, it was confirmed that the researcher's boundary confusion was the result of disorganized attachment and pathological altruism manifested during the 'Camel' stage, where one carries the expectations of others. Second, personal analysis and art therapy served as a 'transitional object' for expressing repressed emotions, acting as a driving force for advancing to the Lion' stage, where one resists existing values and re-establishes psychological boundaries. Third, upon reaching the 'Child' stage - the stage of a creative subject- the researcher discovered the meaning of 'Becoming,' through which she generates her own life and therapeutic identity. In this process, it was confirmed that boundaries are not barriers that exclude others, but a therapeutic foundation that protects the self and fosters a deep understanding of others.
This study is significant in that it demonstrates the process by which a trainee art therapist develops professional expertise by passing through Nietzsche's stages of metamorphosis through self-reflection and artistic work. This suggests that the growth of a therapist is a journey of 'yellow-green Becoming' that begins with self-care and undergoes continuous change.
