    Supervised by professor Tae-Yoon Hwang

    Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the actual conditions of occupational hazardous factor exposure and health management practice levels among nail technicians, and to analyze the factors associated with health management practices, in order to provide basic data for the protection of nail technicians' health.
Data were collected from April 1 to April 28, 2026, through a combination of direct visits to nail salons located in Daegu Metropolitan City and online surveys. A total of 108 participants were included in the final analysis. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and correlation analysis with the SPSS program.
The results showed that 84.3% of the participants frequently perceived dust generation during drill/filing work, and 28.7% had experienced symptoms related to chemical substance exposure. Musculoskeletal burden was highest in the neck, shoulder, and lower back, in that order, and 76.9% of participants maintained the same posture continuously for more than one hour. The overall mean score for health management practices was 3.56 points. Significant differences in health management practice levels were found according to the possession of a footrest (p=0.006), wrist rest (p=0.003), and ventilation method (p=0.003). Participants who frequently perceived dust generation (p=0.010) and those who had experienced chemical substance exposure symptoms (p=0.007) showed significantly lower health management practice levels.
Correlation analysis revealed that safety education experience showed a significant positive correlation with health management practices (r=0.331, p〈0.01), while job stress showed a significant negative correlation (r=-0.318, p〈0.01).
In conclusion, nail technicians are continuously exposed to various occupational hazardous factors, and it is necessary to improve working environments and establish systematic occupational health management along with individual efforts to enhance health management practice levels. In particular, as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has distributed health protection guidelines for nail salon workers, it is suggested that Korea also needs to develop occupational health guidelines and educational materials reflecting the work characteristics of nail technicians, including chemical safety management, ventilation control, protective equipment use, and musculoskeletal disorder prevention.
Key words: Nail technicians, Occupational hazardous factors, Health management practices, Job stress, Safety education.
