Abstract
This study is an autobiographical narrative inquiry that attempts to reflect on and understand the researcher's own psychological dynamics, specifically the "ambivalent feelings toward art," encountered during the process of becoming an art therapist. While art had been the driving force of the researcher's life, it also functioned as a "tool for demonstration and evaluation" to meet the expectations of others, occasionally bringing about psychological paralysis and resistance in front of the blank canvas. To examine these internal conflicts, this study investigated the mechanisms of "public self-consciousness," where one experiences creative paralysis due to being bound by the gaze of others, along with social anxiety responses. Furthermore, it focused on art’s unique "space of simultaneous expression," which visualizes the "structure of the ambivalent mind" where conflicting emotions coexist. It also examined how the self-work of the therapist, facing their own inner shadow as a "wounded healer," can serve as a cornerstone for managing paralysis within the therapeutic setting.
To trace the continuity of the shifts in the researcher's attitude toward art, field texts accumulated from 2015 to 2026 were utilized as data, including art products, dream journals, reflection essays, and the records of 12 sessions of personal analysis with a professional. Data analysis was conducted by tracking the complex emotional dynamics flowing through the narratives within a chronological context, and the final research text was constructed through an interpretive hermeneutic cycle.
The findings of this inquiry revealed a process of therapeutic integration, reconstructing fragmented past experiences and internal resistance toward art into a single, living narrative. The researcher confronted existential issues previously masked by perfectionism and the way of living that had been swept away by the standards of others. By facing emotions that had long been evaded, the researcher experienced a journey toward finding the self as a unique existence. This reflection transformed the resisting art into a medium for honest confession and served as an opportunity to restore the inner courage required to become a mature therapist. Consequently, this study suggests that the experience of self-understanding—honestly confronting one's own ambivalent mind—forms the bedrock of "therapeutic authenticity," allowing the therapist to embrace even the anxiety and resistance of clients in future clinical settings.
