Polyimide (PI) is used in various industrial fields due to its excellent mechanical strength, heat resistance, and insulation properties. However, its optical properties are compromised by high yellowness and low transmittance. In this study, asymmetric diamines were introduced to reduce charge transfer complexes (CTC). Three asymmetric diamine monomers were designed and synthesized, and a total of nine polyimide films were prepared using three dianhydrides (6FDA, DSDA, and BPADA). The structures of the synthesized monomers were confirmed using NMR, and the spectroscopic, thermal, mechanical, and optical properties of the prepared polyimide films were measured using FT-IR, TGA, DSC, DMA, TMA, UTM, and UV-Vis. As a result of the analysis, the polyimide films prepared maintained excellent mechanical strength and thermal stability, while the polyimide film combining monomer (3a) with different substituents and 6FDA exhibited the best optical properties. In addition, by confirming that other films with asymmetric structures also exhibited improved optical properties, it was confirmed that the introduction of asymmetric structures effectively improves the optical properties of polyimide. From these results, it was demonstrated that the polyimide film prepared in this study has the potential to be applied as a cover window for flexible displays.
