    Abstract

This dissertation analyzes the narrative-representational reconstruction of Madeline Usher in Mike Flanagan's Netflix limited series The Fall of the House of Usher (2023), with Edgar Allan Poe's 1839 short story serving as a point of reference. In the original, Madeline is wholly silent, mediated entirely through others' language and gaze; in the adaptation, she reemerges as a speaking and acting subject who initiates the narrative through her own chain of actions. Drawing on the narratological models of Chatman and Greimas as analytical resources and on Foucault's and Butler's theories as critical resources, the study employs purposive sampling based on narrative function to identify twelve key sequences. At the narratological level, a doubled subject structure emerges in which Roderick occupies the nominal position while Madeline operates as the substantive subject. At the discursive level of power and gender, the adaptation grants Madeline the powers of speech, gaze, discipline, and naming through the strategic citation of multiple patriarchal codes; this occupation breaks down before subjects outside the citational system, exposing the citationality of the norm itself and activating a transgenerational form of response from the mother Eliza to the daughter Madeline. The hierarchical combination of patriarchal occupation and matrilineal response constitutes the ambivalent mode of subjectivation, in which Madeline emerges as a case of the ambivalent female subject constructed by contemporary media.
