Awareness and Performance of Hospital Infection Control among Medical Technologists

Graduate School of Environment and Public Health Studies

    Supervised by professor Yong-Gyo Jeong

    Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the levels of awareness and performance of hospital infection control among medical technologists working at hospitals with 30 or more beds in Daegu Metropolitan City, and to analyze the factors affecting their awareness and performance, in order to provide basic data for improving infection control practice levels.
Data were collected from March 9 to March 23, 2026, through direct visits to the clinical laboratories of the selected hospitals. A total of 131 participants were included in the final analysis. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA with Scheffé's post-hoc test, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis using IBM SPSS Statistics 30.0.
The overall mean score for awareness was 4.50±0.46 points and for performance was 4.04±0.69 points, with awareness scoring higher than performance across all six domains. Cleaning and waste management showed the highest scores for both awareness (4.61±0.47) and performance (4.37±0.59), while personal hygiene and clothing management showed the lowest performance score (3.80±0.86). The item with the lowest performance score among all 34 items was "wearing gloves during blood collection" (2.70±1.49), showing the largest gap from its awareness score (4.05±0.88) at 1.35 points. Significant differences in awareness were found according to clinical experience (F = 4.162, p = 0.018), position (t = -2.878, p = 0.006), and the number of days walked per week (t = -2.147, p = 0.034). Significant differences in performance were found according to age (F = 7.456, p 〈 0.001), educational level (t = -3.558, p 〈 0.001), clinical experience (F = 13.745, p 〈 0.001), and position (t = -3.914, p 〈 0.001). Participants without experience with infection accidents (4.28±0.69) showed significantly higher performance than those with experience (3.86±0.64) (t = -3.571, p 〈 0.001).
Pearson correlation analysis revealed a statistically significant positive correlation between overall awareness and performance (r = 0.617, p 〈 0.01). Multiple regression analysis indicated that the availability of infection control guidelines (β = 0.324) and educational experience (β = 0.254) had significant positive effects on awareness, with the model explaining 32.0% of the variance (adjR² = 0.320)(F = 9.741, p 〈 0.001). For performance, educational experience (β = 0.359) and the availability of infection control guidelines (β = 0.279) were significant positive influencing factors, while experience with infection accidents (β = -0.184) was a significant negative influencing factor, with the model explaining 49.5% of the variance (adjR² = 0.495)(F = 19.231, p 〈 0.001).
These findings suggest that medical technologists consistently show a gap between the awareness and performance of hospital infection control, and that educational experience and the availability of infection control guidelines are common influencing factors for both. To improve infection control practice levels among medical technologists, systematic and regular infection control education programs tailored to their occupational characteristics are needed, along with organizational support including the provision of infection control guidelines, protective equipment supply, and the establishment of infection accident reporting systems.
Key words: Medical technologists, Hospital infection control, Awareness, Performance, Infection control education.
