    Abstract
This study examines the Chinese national opera The Orphan of Zhao(赵氏
孤儿), composed by Lei Lei and written by Zou Jingzhi, with a particular
focus on the arias and ensembles of the protagonist Zhao Wu. The
purpose of this study is to investigate the musical characteristics and
dramatic expressions embodied in the work and to explore how Western
operatic structures are integrated with elements of traditional Chinese
music. Since the twentieth century, Chinese original opera has
continuously pursued localization and nationalization while adopting
compositional systems derived from Western opera. Among such works,
The Orphan of Zhao is widely regarded as a representative opera that
successfully combines the spiritual heritage of traditional Chinese culture
    with contemporary musical language.
To achieve these objectives, this study first reviews the historical
development of Western opera and the formation and evolution of Chinese
original opera. It then examines the literary source, historical background,
compositional context, plot structure, and character relationships of The
Orphan of Zhao. Particular attention is given to the dramatic function and
musical characterization of Zhao Wu throughout the opera.
The analysis focuses on Zhao Wu’s aria The Rain Grows Heavier(雨越下越
猛) and the ensembles You Are My Father(你竟然是我的父亲) and Respected
Elder(尊敬的长者). A combined methodology of textual and musical analysis
is employed. The textual analysis investigates the narrative structure and
emotional functions of the lyrics, while the musical analysis examines
melodic development, rhythmic organization, harmonic language, formal
    structure, and vocal expression.
In the aria The Rain Grows Heavier, Zhao Wu’s inner conflict and
emotional tension are progressively intensified through melodic expansion,
rhythmic variation, and dynamic development, thereby enhancing the
dramatic impact of the scene. In the ensemble You Are My Father,
changes in interpersonal relationships and psychological conflicts are
conveyed through musical contrasts and interactions among different vocal
parts. Meanwhile, Respected Elder employs a multi-sectional structure and
contrapuntal writing to depict complex emotional relationships and
dramatic situations among the characters. These vocal numbers not only
possess independent musical value but also function as important
structural elements that propel the dramatic development of the opera.
Furthermore, the study finds that The Orphan of Zhaoreconstructs
traditional Chinese musical elements within a modern operatic context
through the use of pentatonic melodic structures and Western harmonic
language. This musical approach reflects the ongoing exploration of
national identity in Chinese original opera while demonstrating the
distinctive characteristics of contemporary Chinese opera in terms of
    musical language and artistic expression.
In conclusion, The Orphan of Zhao represents not merely an adaptation
of Western operatic forms but also a creative transformation of traditional
Chinese musical language and aesthetic spirit within a modern operatic
framework. Through an analysis of Zhao Wu’s musical characterization,
this study reveals specific manifestations of cross-cultural musical
integration in the work and discusses the artistic identity and future
development of Chinese original opera. It is expected that the findings of
this study will provide useful references for future research on Chinese
opera, vocal performance, and stage practice.
