This study aims to systematically examine the historical development of the Chinese traditional wind instrument xun (塤) from a primitive sound-producing object into a modern professional performance instrument by comprehensively investigating the correlation between changes in its morphology, structure, and performance techniques. To achieve this goal, the study employed a combination of literature analysis, comparative examination of archaeological iconography, and chronological analysis of xun instruments from different historical periods in order to integrate the structural evolution of the instrument with the development of its performance practices.
The findings indicate that the xun of the early Neolithic period functioned primarily as a simple sound-producing blowing vessel. However, through the gradual development of finger-hole structures and blowing-mouth systems, it progressively acquired the ability to produce fixed pitches. During the Pre-Qin and Shang–Zhou periods, the instrument came to function as an early melodic instrument within the ritual music system (yayue, 禮樂). By the Han dynasty, the xun had been incorporated as a core instrument of court yayue, during which the arrangement of finger holes, pitch-regulation methods, and breath-control techniques became standardized. Furthermore, through the codification of musical treatises and pitch theories during the Song and Yuan dynasties, systematic performance norms and transmission systems were established. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, the six-finger-hole system and major performance elements—including breath control, fingering techniques, and tonguing techniques—were formally developed, thereby strengthening the xun’s status as an independent professional instrument.
Since the modern era, the introduction of 11- and 12-hole systems, improvements in internal resonance structures, diversification of materials, and the adoption of equal-temperament tuning systems have dramatically expanded the instrument’s range and expressive capacity. In addition, certain performance techniques from other wind instruments, such as the bamboo flute (dizi), were incorporated; however, these techniques were reconstructed in accordance with the xun’s enclosed resonant structure and evolved into a distinct performance language unique to the instrument. In particular, the modern period has witnessed increasing specialization in breath, fingering, and tonguing systems, as well as the expansion of ornamental techniques, enabling the xun to transcend its former role as a simple monophonic instrument and become an artistic medium capable of expressing complex emotions and musical narratives.
Moreover, through a comparative analysis of the traditional work Yangguan Sandie (陽關三疊) and the modern composition Yesi (夜思), this study confirms that the xun has evolved from a restrained expressive style centered on the traditional pentatonic system toward one that embraces modern chromatic structures and expanded techniques. This demonstrates that the xun is not merely an instrument for preserving tradition, but rather a dynamic musical-cultural system that continues to be reconstructed in response to changing historical demands and musical environments.
In conclusion, the developmental history of the xun represents not simply a transformation in instrumental structure, but a complex process of cultural change shaped through the interaction of historical circumstances, ritual-music ideology, music theory, science and technology, as well as performance and educational systems. By systematically organizing the developmental history of xun performance techniques, this study expands the scope of research on Chinese traditional music culture into the dimensions of performance practice and musical-cultural transformation. Furthermore, it highlights the significance of the xun as an important cultural asset capable of contributing to the sustainable development of contemporary musical culture.
