With the increasing integration of traditional cultural elements into
contemporary visual design, bronze patterns from ancient China have gained
renewed attention as valuable visual resources. However, existing studies
mainly focus on their historical, cultural, and symbolic meanings, while
their systematic application in character illustration design remains
limited.
This study aims to explore the transformation and application of bronze
patterns in character illustration. It investigates how traditional decorative motifs can be reinterpreted as structural visual elements within
character design. The research focuses on three main questions: how bronze
patterns can be integrated into character illustrations, whether they
function as decorative or structural elements, and how they can be adapted
to modern visual contexts while preserving their cultural identity.
Through literature review, visual analysis, comparative analysis, and
case study methods, this research analyzes the formal characteristics and
structural logic of bronze patterns. Based on these analyses, a
transformation process is proposed, consisting of extraction,
simplification, reconstruction, and integration.
The results indicate that bronze patterns can extend beyond surface
decoration and contribute to the structural formation of character imagery.
Different types of patterns serve distinct visual functions, and they can
be effectively applied to various aspects of character design, such as
costume, headwear, and facial details.
This study provides a new perspective on the contemporary application of
traditional patterns and offers a practical framework for integrating
cultural elements into modern character illustration design.
