In the era of highly developed digital media technology, fan culture has shifted from a traditional passive reception model to an active production model centered on participatory culture. The production and exchange of fan-made goods, as a cultural practice possessing both materiality and symbolic significance, plays important social functions within fan communities. However, scholarly attention to identity construction through fan material practices remains limited.
This study takes the fan community of Mayday, a rock band with profound influence in the Chinese-language music scene, as a case study. It focuses on the production, display, and exchange of fan-made goods, exploring how fans construct self-identity, group identity, and role identity through material practices. The study integrates Collins's interaction ritual chain theory as the core analytical framework, Jenkins's participatory culture theory as the background condition, Tajfel's Social Identity Theory (for the group identity level) and Stryker's Identity Theory (for the role identity level) as the outcome explanation, and media materiality theory playing a mediating role, constructing a "ritualized materiality" analytical model. Methodologically, the study employs three qualitative methods: 11-month virtual ethnography, multimodal text analysis (87 material samples, 218 social media posts, and 156 exchange texts), and semi-structured in-depth interviews with 15 participants.
The study yields the following findings. First, the production of fan-made goods shows a tendency to strengthen fans’ self-identity through three paths: skill transfer, aesthetic distinction, and autonomous space creation. Second, material exchange can be understood as a typical interaction ritual; the material attributes of fan-made goods show the possibility of exerting mediating effects through three dimensions of ritualized materiality: symbolic condensation, emotional amplification, and boundary solidification. Third, fan communities provide members with an alternative social stage where everyday status criteria are replaced by community-internal standards such as creative ability and emotional investment. Fourth, self-identity, group identity, and role identity exhibit a progressive deepening relationship with mutually reinforcing feedback loops.
The theoretical implications include: proposing the concept of ritualized materiality to extend the material dimension of interaction ritual chain theory; constructing an integrated analytical model of material practice-interaction ritual-identity construction; and revealing the alternative social stage. This study holds significant value for understanding fan culture ecology, the intrinsic dynamics of fan material practices, and cultural identity construction among youth groups in the digital age.
