The expansion of digital reading environments has changed the way readers access texts and search for information. However, reading practices centered on rapid information consumption and efficiency may weaken the experience of active reading, which requires deep understanding and sustained immersion in a text. Recently, AI-based reading support services have provided various functions to support reading immersion. However, these services are generally offered as separate function-centered tools across multiple platforms, and they have limitations in supporting readers’ actual reading contexts and moments of immersion breakdown in an integrated manner.
Therefore, this study aims to propose design directions for a UX/UI-based AI reading assistant that enhances the experience of active reading immersion. To this end, this study first reviewed theories related to active reading, reading immersion, reading comprehension processes, and AI-based reading support services. Then, through a first-stage individual heuristic interview and a second- stage focus group interview, this study investigated readers’ reading behaviors, factors that interrupt immersion, and strategies for maintaining and recovering immersion. Based on these findings, this study derived two frameworks: the “Reading User Experience Framework,” which structures readers’ reading behaviors and factors that interrupt immersion, and the “Reading Immersion Support Elements Framework,” which organizes support elements for enhancing reading immersion.
As a result, this study found that an AI reading assistant should reduce the burden of entering a text before reading, immediately resolve comprehension difficulties that arise during reading, adjust content according to the reader’s level and context, and support sensory immersion and motivation to continue reading. In addition, AI support functions should be provided within the reading screen and the current reading context, allowing readers to call functions when needed and quickly return to their original reading flow.
Based on these findings, this study mapped the two frameworks to connect readers’ immersion-disrupting factors with appropriate support elements, and then derived design directions for an AI reading assistant. Representative core functions were selected from the derived directions, and corresponding UX/UI solutions and wireframes were proposed. The proposed solution focuses not on having AI perform reading on behalf of the reader, but on helping readers interact more deeply with the original text and maintain reading immersion. Finally, a wireframe-based prototype was developed and user validation was conducted to examine the usability, reading support potential, and future improvement directions of the proposed solution.
This study is significant in that it views the AI reading assistant not merely as an information-providing tool, but as an experience mediator that supports readers’ active reading immersion. Furthermore, by connecting frameworks, design directions, and representative functional solutions based on readers’ actual reading experiences, this study presents UX/UI design directions for future AIbased reading services to expand into integrated reading experiences that support readers’ understanding, immersion, and motivation to continue reading.
