(Korean Version of the Mattering Scale; K-MS), (Korean Version of the Fear of Missing Out; K-FoMO), (Korean Version of the Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder Scale; K-CSBD-19)를 활용하였다.

Based on Sociometer Theory, this study aimed to examine the effect of mattering on addictive behavioral tendency through the mediating role of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) among emerging adults, and to verify whether the common underlying pathway posited by Shaffer's Syndrome Model of Addiction applies equally to problem gambling and compulsive sexual behavior. Through this examination, the study sought to contribute to an integrated understanding of behavioral addictions and to the development of intervention strategies.
The participants were early adults aged 19 to 29 years. Data were collected through an online survey, and after excluding 15 cases of careless responses from the initial sample of 400, a total of 385 responses were used for the final analysis. This study was conducted with approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Handong Global University (Approval No. 2026-HGUA005). Participants were provided with information regarding the purpose and procedures of the study, as well as the principles of personal information protection, and data were collected after obtaining electronic informed consent. The measurement instruments employed in this study were the Korean Version of the Mattering Scale (K-MS) to assess mattering, the Korean Version of the Fear of Missing Out Scale (K-FoMO) to assess fear of missing out, the Korean Version of the Canadian Problem Gambling Index (K-CPGI) to assess problem gambling, and the Korean Version of the Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder Scale (K-CSBD-19) to assess compulsive sexual behavior.
Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 22.0, and the analytic procedures were as follows. First, Cronbach's α coefficients were calculated to verify the reliability of the measurement instruments. Second, frequency analyses were conducted to identify the demographic characteristics of the participants and their characteristics related to Addictive Behavioral Tendency, namely Problem Gambling and Compulsive Sexual Behavior. Third, descriptive statistics -including means, standard deviations, minimum and maximum values, skewness, and kurtosis- were computed to examine the assumption of normality for the major variables. Fourth, tolerance and variance inflation factor (VIF) values were examined to assess multicollinearity. Fifth, independent samples t-tests, one-way ANOVAs, and Scheffé post-hoc tests were conducted to examine mean differences in the major variables according to demographic characteristics. Sixth, Pearson correlation analyses were performed to examine the relationships among the major variables. Seventh, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted using maximum likelihood estimation. Eighth, the direct, indirect, and total effects among the major variables were examined through effect decomposition of the model. Ninth, bootstrapping with 5,000 resamples was performed to test the statistical significance of the indirect effects, and the difference between the two indirect effects was additionally examined.
The main findings of this study are as follows. First, the internal consistency coefficients of the measurement instruments ranged from .896 to .967, indicating stable reliability. Second, the descriptive statistics of the major variables were confirmed, and the assumption of normality was satisfied. Third, the mean difference analysis according to demographic characteristics revealed that females scored significantly higher than males on mattering, while males scored significantly higher than females on problem gambling and compulsive sexual behavior; no significant gender difference was observed in FoMO. With respect to occupation, undergraduate and graduate students reported the highest level of problem gambling. Fourth, the Pearson correlation analysis showed that mattering was significantly negatively correlated with FoMO, problem gambling, and compulsive sexual behavior, while FoMO was significantly positively correlated with both problem gambling and compulsive sexual behavior; problem gambling and compulsive sexual behavior were also significantly positively correlated with each other. Fifth, the confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the measurement model demonstrated an acceptable fit, χ²(df= 71)= 232.138, RMSEA= .077, TLI= .953, CFI= .963. Sixth, the effect decomposition revealed that mattering had significant negative direct effects on FoMO (β= -.583, p〈 .001), problem gambling (β= -.409, p〈 .001), and compulsive sexual behavior (β= -.465, p〈 .001), and FoMO had significant positive direct effects on problem gambling (β= .298, p〈 .001) and compulsive sexual behavior (β= .286, p〈 .001). Moreover, the indirect effects of mattering on problem gambling (β= -.174, p〈 .001) and compulsive sexual behavior (β= -.167, p〈 .001) through FoMO were also statistically significant. Seventh, the bootstrapping procedure confirmed that both indirect effects were statistically significant, as their 95% confidence intervals did not include zero. Furthermore, the test of the difference between the two indirect effects using a phantom variable approach indicated that the difference in the magnitude of the two indirect effects was not statistically significant (B= -.007, 95% CI [-.065, .076]).
The significance of this study is as follows. First, this study extends the existing body of addictive behavioral tendency, which has predominantly focused on cognitive and emotional variables, by empirically examining the role of matteringa relational self-perception- as a key variable in understanding addictive behaviors. Second, by elucidating the psychological process through which fear of missing out leads to addictive behaviors, this study provides a theoretical basis for understanding addictive behaviors as existential motivations stemming from unmet relational needs, rather than as moral failings. Third, grounded in Shaffer's Syndrome Model of Addiction, this study directly verified within a single structural model that mattering and fear of missing out function as common mechanisms underlying both problem gambling and compulsive sexual behavior. Finally, the limitations of this study and suggestions for future research were discussed.
