This study establishes the sequential adaptation system of “Online Literature → Comic Adaptation → Animation Adaptation” as its analytical object, examining its impact on the production mechanisms, value appreciation, and market performance of the Chinese animation industry. The core arguments are as follows: The comic adaptation stage functions as an early-stage verification of subject matter and characters under low-cost conditions, forming an “intermediate script” (character designs, scene palettes, and storyboard samples) that can be directly utilized in production. Based on this, the animation stage promotes the deepening of scripts and asset-based production, accumulating brand equity and realizing long-tail returns through multi-channel distribution. While focusing on the Chinese market, this study performs a comparative analysis with Korean and overseas ecosystems, focusing on the period from 2015 to 2025. Representative successful adaptations such as Soul Land (Douluo Dalu), Throne of Seal, Dragon Raja, The King’s Avatar, and Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation were selected as case studies.
The research methodology adopts a mixed design combining “Literature–Text–Case–Indicator.” First, by synthesizing prior research on web literature adaptation, transmedia storytelling, platform economics, and the animation industry, key concepts such as chain adaptation, intermediate scripts, and asset-based production were clarified. Next, a semi-quantitative text analysis was conducted on identical series samples across the “Original–Comic–Animation” trajectory to record transition characteristics in narrative rhythm, character arcs, visual motifs, and shot/scene direction. These findings were validated through platform data to analyze operational mechanisms and conduct cross-case comparisons.
The analysis reveals that the completion rate and interaction density during the comic stage show a significant correlation with the subsequent animation’s broadcast performance, supporting the “Comic-first, Animation-second” incremental investment model. As an intermediate script, comics reduce early-stage exploration and rework while enhancing style consistency and asset recycling rates. In this process, data–creation–production forms a stable closed-loop system. It was observed that scenes receiving high engagement in comics tend to be translated into longer shots, more granular movements, and recurring musical motifs in the animation. Distinct differences by genre also emerged: Xuanhuan/Xianxia genres benefited significantly from visualized leveling systems and 2D/3D hybrid pipelines, while female-oriented and BL genres relied heavily on emotional rhythms composed of facial expressions, camera distance, and the interplay between stillness and motion. Reality and e-sports themes prioritized realism and information visualization. Furthermore, while AIGC improved efficiency in storyboard sketching, scene white-boxing, and quality inspection, the study suggests a need for clear boundaries regarding copyright and legal compliance.
In the comparative analysis, China’s “Comic-first Adaptation” model was examined alongside Korea’s “Webtoon-first, Global-oriented” model, Japan’s “Publisher-led Production Committee” model, and North America’s “Platform-led Streaming Distribution” path. The results indicate that while China holds a relative advantage in its vast work pool, flexible cost structures, and rapid technological updates, it faces limitations in the depth of industrialization, standardization of copyright norms, and the establishment of overseas distribution channels. To enhance the reliability of the conclusions, the study employed genre control and platform fixed-effects, conducted event studies observing changes around key milestones, and performed group heterogeneity and robustness tests, cross-referencing interview records with production documents.
For practical application, the study presents instrumental outcomes such as criteria for scene selection and simplification, limits of asset recycling, thresholds for visual style consistency, and an operational/promotion schedule spanning from 30 days before to 90 days after release. However, due to differences in statistical standards across platforms and constraints on external validity, caution is required in generalizing the findings. Future research should expand data sources, track human-machine collaboration through onsite observations, and systematically evaluate the governance and regulatory frameworks accompanying AIGC to further refine the chain adaptation model.
