In recent years, many countries around the world, including the United States and other Western countries, have experienced a decline in public trust in government. In contrast, China has maintained a consistently high level of government trust from 2014 to 2024. Against this background, increasing scholarly attention has been devoted to understanding the factors that contribute to this sustained high level of government trust in China, particularly the role played by different types of media.
However, existing studies on the relationship between media exposure and government trust in China still have several limitations. First, many studies are grounded in the context of Western democratic systems and tend to emphasize the watchdog role of the media in monitoring and criticizing government. This perspective is insufficient for explaining the multiple functions of media within China’s specific political and media context. Second, previous research often treats media as a homogeneous information source and pays insufficient attention to differences among media types. In reality, China’s media environment includes state-run media, non-state-run media, and Western media, each with distinct institutional attributes, communication logics, and social influence. Third, the psychological mechanisms through which media exposure affects government trust remain underexplored, particularly the roles of political identification and political efficacy. Fourth, most previous studies focus mainly on legacy media and pay relatively limited attention to the rapidly changing digital media environment shaped by smartphones, artificial intelligence, and new media platforms.
To address these limitations, this study examines how exposure to different types of online media affects government trust among Chinese internet users and investigates the mediating roles of political identification, internal political efficacy, and external political efficacy. Moving beyond the traditional watchdog perspective, this study considers China’s specific political and media context and classifies online media into three categories: state-run media, non-state-run media, and western media.
Data were collected through a stratified multistage sampling survey, yielding 658 valid responses. The data were analyzed using SPSS 27.0 and AMOS 27.0. Descriptive statistics, reliability and validity tests, correlation analysis, one-way ANOVA, and regression analysis were first conducted, followed by Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to test the proposed relationships among variables.
The findings are as follows. First, different types of media exposure have differential effects on government trust. Specifically, exposure to state-run media has a significant positive effect on government trust. Exposure to non-state-run media also has a significant positive effect on government trust, but its effect size is relatively smaller than that of state-run media. In contrast, exposure to Western media has a significant negative effect on government trust. Second, the mediating mechanisms vary across media types. Exposure to state-run media affects government trust indirectly through political identification, internal political efficacy, and external political efficacy. In contrast, exposure to Western media affects government trust indirectly through political identification and external political efficacy, while the mediating effect of internal political efficacy is not significant. No significant mediating effects are found for exposure to non-state-run media.
Finally, this study discusses the theoretical and practical implications of these findings for understanding government trust in China within the context of a rapidly evolving digital media environment.
