Drawing on Charles Sanders Peirce’s triadic model of the sign—Representamen, Object, and Interpretant—this study examines the semiotic mechanisms of prompt language in generative artificial intelligence (AIGC)-based product design. On this basis, it proposes a Prompt–Sign–Design Generation (PSD) analytical framework. Three research questions guide the study. RQ1 asks whether significant differences in form fidelity and semantic transmission efficiency emerge when only the second layer of an English-controlled four-layer prompt structure—namely, the transformation directive—is replaced with ideographic scripts (traditional and simplified Chinese characters) and phonographic scripts (Korean and English). RQ2 investigates the conditional interaction effect between the language sign type of the Layer-2 deformation vocabulary and the type of deformation command on the visual interpretation direction of AI-generated images. RQ3 explores whether the difference in Semiotic Depth between traditional and simplified Chinese characters is empirically reflected in AI image generation and how supplementary prompt strategies can be developed to compensate for these differences.
The experiment employed a 4 × 4 × 4 full factorial design comprising four writing systems, four geometric forms, and four transformation commands. A total of 64 experimental conditions were constructed, producing 960 images through the NanoBanana Pro (v2.3) platform. The generated images were evaluated through a blind assessment by a panel of product design experts using five indicators: E1 (form fidelity), E2 (semantic transmission efficiency), E3 (richness of detail), E4 (cultural style tendency), and E5 (abnormal image occurrence rate). Inter-rater reliability was examined using Krippendorff’s alpha coefficient.
The findings are summarized as follows. First, regarding RQ1, the one-way ANOVA results showed that language type exerted a statistically significant effect on all evaluation indicators, with approximately 66.5% of the total variance attributable to language type. Tukey’s HSD post-hoc test revealed that ideographic scripts significantly outperformed phonographic scripts in terms of form accuracy and overall visual detail. Second, regarding RQ2, a significant language × command interaction was identified, indicating that the strength of language-based advantage varies according to the degree of iconicity embedded in each transformation command. Third, in relation to RQ3, traditional Chinese characters scored significantly higher than simplified characters in the overall quality mean. This suggests that the pictographic stroke structure of traditional Chinese characters may function as an "Iconic Triggering Mechanism" within the AI latent space, directly activating specific clusters of visual features.
Based on these results, this study formulates the PSD analytical framework as a six-stage chain of semiotic transformation and proposes a Supplementary Prompt Methodology. Applications to earphone and digital camera design cases demonstrated that these strategies allow E1–E5 indicators to recover to approximately 85–93% of the performance level observed under the traditional-character condition.
This study makes three theoretical contributions: establishing the Iconic Triggering Mechanism, extending the scope of product semantics to the context of AIGC-based design, and operationalizing the concept of Semiotic Depth. From a practical perspective, it provides an AIGC-integrated six-stage product design process and an E1–E5 evaluation system, establishing a methodological foundation for AI-assisted product design in multilingual environments.
