This study projected current and future changes in the potential habitat of the Mongolian racerunner (Eremias argus) in the Republic of Korea and identified areas where habitat decline was consistently predicted under multiple future climate conditions. Twenty-three occurrence records collected between 2007 and 2018 and 14 climate, terrain, land-cover, vegetation, and proximity variables were used to construct an ensemble species distribution model in BIOMOD2. Eight algorithms were applied, and models with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.70 or higher were combined using an ensemble weighted-mean approach.
Future habitat suitability was projected under the SSP2–4.5 and SSP5–8.5 scenarios for 2041–2070 and 2071–2100. The ensemble model produced an AUC of 0.978. Current habitat suitability was relatively high in parts of Gangwon Yeongdong and northern Gyeongsangbuk-do. Distance to natural areas, the topographic wetness index, distance to the ocean, and precipitation seasonality showed relatively high variable importance.
The current suitable habitat area was estimated at 8,095 km². Under SSP2–4.5, it decreased to 4,271 km² in 2041–2070 and 4,596 km² in 2071–2100. Under SSP5–8.5, it decreased to 3,181 km² and 4,428 km², respectively. Although suitable habitat increased slightly in the late-century period compared with the mid-century period, all future estimates remained below the current level.
Consensus-based analysis identified 3,867 km² of habitat-loss hotspots and 140 km² of strong-decline hotspots occurring under at least three of the four future conditions. Habitat loss was mainly projected around the margins of current suitable habitats and in western, central, lowland, and coastal areas, whereas parts of Gangwon Yeongdong and northern Gyeongsangbuk-do retained relatively high suitability.
These results provide national-scale spatial information for identifying areas requiring field surveys, long-term monitoring, and conservation review. The projected areas represent potential environmental suitability rather than confirmed occupancy or population persistence.
