The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a Gestalt-based group counseling program for enhancing relationality among upper elementary school students by integrating developmentally appropriate Waldorf educational elements into Gestalt therapy. The program was grounded in Gestalt therapy and designed to incorporate Waldorf educational elements appropriate for children's developmental level.
The program development process began with a literature review and expert consultations to identify the need for the program. Based on these findings, a theoretical model and a program model were designed, and the program was subsequently developed. Delphi surveys, expert consultations, and a pilot study were then conducted to examine the content validity of the program. The final program was established through a process of revision and refinement.
The program was implemented with 33 sixth-grade elementary school students, consisting of an experimental group (N = 16) and a control group (N = 17). It was conducted from September 4 to October 23, 2025, over a six-week period. Participants attended one session per week, with two consecutive 40-minute sessions per day, including a break between sessions, for a total of 12 sessions (10 hours).
To evaluate the effectiveness of the program, both quantitative and qualitative research methods were employed. In the quantitative analysis, pretest, posttest, and follow-up assessments were conducted to examine the effectiveness and sustainability of the program and to compare differences between the experimental and control groups. The measures included self-concept, self-expression behavior, and empathy, which were conceptualized as components of relationality. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and nonparametric statistical methods, including the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Friedman test, using SPSS 21.0. For the qualitative analysis, participants’ responses and evaluations (written reflections), transcripts, and observation and interview data from the homeroom teacher and the researcher were collected. Triangulation was employed to enhance the validity of the analysis. Qualitative data were analyzed using a deductive content analysis approach and a categorization matrix to examine changes throughout the program participation process.
The quantitative findings indicated that self-concept and empathy significantly improved following participation in the program, and these effects were maintained six weeks after the completion of the program. In addition, self-expression behavior and empathy showed significantly greater improvements in the experimental group than in the control group. Large effect sizes were found for self-concept and empathy in the within-group analyses, while medium effect sizes were identified for self-expression behavior and empathy in the between-group comparisons. Qualitative findings revealed that changes in relationality followed a process characterized by bodily awareness, self-awareness, self-expression, empathy toward oneself, others, and the environment, and relational integration.
This study is significant in that it developed and validated a Gestalt-based group counseling program for enhancing relationality integrating Waldorf physical activities for upper elementary school students. The findings suggest that Waldorf physical activities can play a facilitative role in the process of enhancing relationality among upper elementary school students. Furthermore, this study expanded the theoretical understanding of relationality by integrating the relational process structure of Gestalt therapy with the developmental process of Waldorf education and presented a practical program for enhancing relationality among upper elementary school students that can be applied in school and counseling settings, thereby demonstrating both theoretical and practical significance.
