This study examined the effects of family communication on teacher–student relationships among middle school students and investigated the moderating role of self-esteem in these relationships. Teacher–student relationships were conceptualized in two dimensions: teacher-liking, reflecting cognitive and emotional acceptance of teachers, and teacher-closeness, reflecting behavioral connectedness with teachers. Family communication was set as the independent variable, and self-esteem was examined as a moderating variable. To enhance the validity of the research model, gender, socioeconomic status, peer attachment, parental marital conflict, and parental school involvement were included as control variables.
Data were drawn from 1,213 second-year middle school students who participated in the 15th wave of the Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC). The data were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 and PROCESS Macro 4.3.
The results were as follows. First, family communication and self-esteem positively predicted both teacher-liking and teacher-closeness, indicating that open family communication and higher self-esteem contributed to more positive teacher–student relationships. Second, self-esteem significantly moderated the relationship between family communication and teacher-liking. Specifically, the positive effect of family communication on teacher-liking was stronger among students with higher levels of self-esteem, whereas the effect was not significant among students with low levels of self-esteem. Third, self-esteem also significantly moderated the relationship between family communication and teacher-closeness, indicating that higher self-esteem strengthened the positive association between family communication and teacher-closeness. Fourth, peer attachment and parental school involvement significantly influenced teacher–student relationships. Notably, family communication remained a significant predictor even after controlling for peer attachment, highlighting the fundamental role of the family environment. In addition, male students reported significantly higher levels of teacher-closeness than female students.
This study highlights a developmental mechanism through which family communication contributes to teacher–student relationships, with self-esteem functioning as an important moderating factor. These findings suggest that interventions aimed at enhancing teacher–student relationships should integrate environmental support, such as parent education programs, with individualized counseling strategies designed to strengthen students’ self-esteem.
