Individuals who engage in pro-environmental behavior (PEB) at home often behave less sustainably while traveling. Although previous
studies have acknowledged this inconsistency, most have treated it as a simple behavioral gap without adequately explaining the underlying psychological mechanisms. Addressing this limitation, this dissertation introduces the Home–Destination Behavioral Divergence (H-DBD)
framework, which conceptualizes variation in PEB as a directional and context-sensitive phenomenon shaped by structural tourism conditions and psychological processes. Drawing on Psychological Ownership (PO) theory, the dissertation proposes that tourists' environmental
behavior depends largely on the extent to which destinations are psychologically integrated into the self.
The dissertation consists of three interconnected components: empirically establishing H-DBD, examining how distance dimensions and
ownership-forming factors influence PO formation at destinations, and investigating how PO influences PEB through awareness of
consequences (AC) and ascribed responsibility (AR). Data were collected via an online survey administered by Embrain involving 400
Korean international travelers who had undertaken overseas leisure travel within the previous three months. One-sample t-tests, hierarchical regression analysis, and PLS-SEM were employed for analysis.
The findings confirm significant home–destination behavioral divergence, with tourists reporting lower PEB at destinations than at home.
Counterintuitively, AC and AR were higher at destinations despite lower behavioral performance, suggesting that awareness and moral
obligation alone are insufficient to sustain environmentally responsible behavior in tourism settings. Physical and psychological distance
constrain PO formation, while sense of belonging emerges as its strongest predictor. PO positively influences PEB both directly and indirectly
through AC. Although AC significantly increases AR, AR does not independently predict PEB, indicating that responsibility perceptions
remain behaviorally limited in temporary tourism environments without stronger self–place integration.
The dissertation contributes theoretically by introducing H-DBD as a mechanism-based framework and extending PO theory into comparative tourism contexts, and methodologically by introducing a bipolar comparative measurement approach capturing both direction and magnitude of behavioral divergence. Practically, the findings suggest destinations should move beyond information-based sustainability campaigns and
instead develop belonging-oriented experiences and ownership-based engagement strategies that strengthen tourists' psychological
connection with destinations.

(Ascribed Responsibility: AR)
