The purpose of this study is to analyze perceptual differences in fashion design according to changes in garment color, focusing on visual attention and emotional evaluation. Color has been recognized as an important design element that influences visual perception and emotional response; however, empirical studies that simultaneously analyze how controlled changes in garment color affect eye movements and emotional evaluation remain limited. Accordingly, centered on the research question that emotional evaluation and visual activity would differ according to changes in the color of fashion images, this study conducted visual attention analysis using eye-tracking technology and an emotional evaluation experiment.
The experimental results are as follows. First, based on the data collected from the experimental participants through eye-tracking, a one-way analysis of variance was conducted, and the results showed that differences in gaze fixation proportion according to color condition were not statistically significant. This suggests that, in the stimulus images used in this study, color change did not function as a major factor influencing the allocation of visual attention among the experimental participants. However, because this study did not directly examine visual factors other than color, there are limitations in interpreting these results definitively. In addition, because the collected sample size was somewhat limited, it is considered appropriate to understand the results of this study as exploratory findings for follow-up research rather than as conclusive evidence of color effects.
Second, in the emotional evaluation conducted after image viewing, significant differences appeared in some emotional adjectives according to color condition. Specifically, significant differences according to color condition were confirmed in the adjective pairs “intense–subtle,” “warm–cold,” and “rational–emotional.” The red color tended to be evaluated as relatively more “intense” than the other colors, while the yellow color was evaluated as having a relatively more “rational” emotional impression than the other colors. In addition, the blue and green colors were evaluated as having a “cold” emotional impression compared with the red and yellow colors. As a result of conducting t-test analysis to examine more specific differences between colors, additional emotional differences that had not been revealed in the comparison across all color conditions were confirmed. The red color was evaluated as having a more “fresh” emotional impression than the blue color, and the yellow color was found to convey a stronger “lively” emotional impression than the green and blue colors. In addition, the green color was evaluated as having a more “delicate” emotional impression than the yellow color, and it was confirmed that the blue color was evaluated as having a more “stylish” and “emotional” impression than the yellow color.
In summary, this study confirmed that changes in garment color did not produce clear differences in visual attention activity, but showed selectively significant differences in the dimension of emotional cognition. This suggests the possibility that, in the process of fashion image perception, changes in color condition may operate more sensitively in the formation of emotional impressions than in the allocation of visual attention. However, because the number of participants in this study was limited, it is judged appropriate to interpret the research results as exploratory findings rather than to generalize them as definitive conclusions. Future studies need to secure a sufficient sample size and more precisely verify the relationship among garment color, visual attention, and emotional evaluation by using diverse fashion stimuli and additional eye-tracking indicators.
