In competitive sports, psychological factors are closely related to athletes’ performance. Among these factors, pre-competition anxiety is widely regarded as an important psychological state that may be negatively associated with athletes’ perceived performance in competition. At the same time, psychological resilience, as a positive psychological resource, may help athletes cope with pressure, adapt to challenging situations, and maintain stable performance. As aerobic gymnastics requires technical precision, concentration, coordination, expressive quality, and emotional control, it is particularly important to examine the relationships among pre-competition anxiety, psychological resilience, and perceived athletic performance in this context. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between pre-competition anxiety and perceived athletic performance among collegiate aerobic gymnastics athletes and to further examine the possible mediating role of psychological resilience in this relationship. This study adopted a cross-sectional survey design. A total of 421 collegiate aerobic gymnastics athletes participated in the study. Standardized scales were used to measure pre-competition anxiety, psychological resilience, and perceived athletic performance. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, structural equation modeling, and mediation analysis.

Standardized scales were used to measure pre-competition anxiety, psychological resilience, and perceived athletic performance. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, structural equation modeling, and mediation analysis.
The results suggested that pre-competition anxiety was significantly and negatively associated with perceived athletic performance and psychological resilience, whereas psychological resilience was significantly and positively associated with perceived athletic performance. In addition, psychological resilience partially mediated the relationship between pre-competition anxiety and perceived athletic performance.
This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the relationships among pre-competition anxiety, psychological resilience, and perceived athletic performance. Theoretically, it extends research on these variables in the field of sport psychology and provides empirical support for the possible mediating role of psychological resilience in competitive sports. Practically, the findings suggest that reducing excessive pre-competition anxiety and strengthening psychological resilience may help collegiate aerobic gymnastics athletes maintain more stable perceived athletic performance. In terms of real-world significance, this study provides useful guidance for coaches, athletes, and sport practitioners in developing psychological training and pre-competition intervention strategies.
