The rapid adoption of generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots has positioned them as an increasingly common source of political information, yet their synthesized, sourceless outputs raise questions about whether engagement with them strengthens citizens’ factual political knowledge. This study examined whether and how generative AI chatbot usage shapes objective political knowledge among Korean users, drawing on media-effects theory, the trust-in-automation framework, information-processing perspectives, and the construct of AI literacy. A moderated mediation model was proposed in which AI usage influences political knowledge through trust in AI, with AI literacy moderating both the trust–knowledge path and the direct usage–knowledge path. Data were collected through a cross-sectional, bilingual (Korean–English) online survey of Korean users of generative AI chatbots. After screening and attention-check exclusions, the final sample comprised 156 participants. The model was tested using PROCESS Model 15 with 5,000 percentile bootstrap samples, specifying AI usage as the independent variable, trust in AI as the mediator, AI literacy as the moderator, and 1 The author of this thesis is a Global Korea Scholarship scholar sponsored by the Korean Government. objective political knowledge as the dependent variable, with age, gender, and political interest as covariates. The results were mixed and, in several respects, contrary to expectation. AI usage strongly predicted trust in AI, but the direct effect of usage on political knowledge was significant and negative, opposite to the hypothesized direction, and trust did not mediate the relationship. AI literacy emerged as a significant positive predictor of political knowledge and significantly moderated the direct usage–knowledge path in the hypothesized direction, buffering the negative effect of usage; it also moderated the trust – knowledge path significantly, though opposite to the predicted direction, while the index of moderated mediation did not reach significance. The study’s principal contribution is to specify the relationship between generative AI engagement and objective political knowledge as negative overall yet conditional on AI literacy, identifying AI literacy as the competence that distinguishes constructive from unproductive engagement. Practically, the findings caution that confidence in generative AI may outpace its contribution to an informed citizenry, while supporting AI literacy education that calibrates trust to accuracy.
