The global expansion of the Korean Wave (Hallyu) has significantly influenced beauty perceptions across many countries, including Vietnam. Korean media content, particularly advertisements and social media influencers (KOLs), continuously presents idealized appearance standards that may shape individuals’ perceptions and psychological well-being. While previous studies have primarily examined these influences from a marketing perspective, limited research has explored the underlying psychological mechanisms through which Korean media affects body image. This study aims to investigate the impact of Korean advertisements and Korean KOLs on perceived beauty standards and body image insecurity among Vietnamese consumers. In particular, the study examines the mediating role of perceived beauty standards in explaining how media exposure translates into psychological outcomes. Data were collected from 260 Vietnamese respondents through an online survey and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results indicate that both Korean advertisements and Korean KOLs have significant positive effects on perceived beauty standards. In turn, perceived beauty standards strongly increase body image insecurity. Importantly, the findings confirm a full mediation effect, suggesting that media exposure influences body image insecurity indirectly through the internalization of beauty standards. This study contributes to the literature by shifting the focus from consumption outcomes to psychological consequences, highlighting the role of media as a sociocultural force that shapes appearance-related perceptions. From a health communication perspective, the findings suggest that excessive exposure to idealized beauty content may intensify appearance-related pressure and negatively affect individuals’ self-perception. The study provides important implications for media practitioners and policymakers regarding the need for more responsible representation of beauty standards in contemporary media environments.
