As esports audiences continue to expand and diversify, understanding how different groups of spectators engage with esports content has become increasingly important for both academic research and industry practice. Using Arena of Valor (AoV) in Vietnam as a strategic proxy, the research seeks to identify gender-based variations in spectating motives and engagement patterns, while examining moderating role of gender in the relationship between viewing motivations and fan engagement.

A quantitative research design was employed using survey data collected from 400 adult Arena of Valor viewers in Vietnam, equally divided between male and female respondents. Viewing motivations were measured across three dimensions: skill-based, entertainment-based, and relationship-based motivations. Fan engagement was assessed through five dimensions: management cooperation, emotional engagement, knowledge generation, socialization, and word-of-mouth. The data were analyzed using MANOVA, hierarchical regression, and moderation analysis.

The findings indicate that viewing motivations and engagement patterns varied across gender groups, broadly reflecting the agentic–communal orientations suggested by Social Role Theory. Skill-based motivations and knowledge-related engagement were relatively more prominent among male respondents, whereas relationship-based motivations, emotional engagement, socialization, and word-of-mouth were more strongly reported by female participants. No significant gender difference was found for entertainment-based motivations. Crucially, moderation analyses revealed that gender influenced several motivations–engagement relationships, suggesting that similar motivations may translate into different forms of engagement across spectators.
