As academic helplessness has emerged as an important educational issue, the need for early intervention has become increasingly salient. In particular, academic helplessness in elementary school may contribute to later academic difficulties and school dropout; however, previous studies have primarily focused on middle and high school students. The present study examined the relationship between the student-teacher relationship perceived by elementary school students and academic helplessness, as well as the mediating role of self-concept in this relationship.
A survey was conducted with fifth- and sixth-grade elementary school students residing in the Seoul metropolitan area, including Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon. A total of 312 responses were analyzed using PROCESS Macro Model 4 to test the mediating effects.
The results showed that the student-teacher relationship had a significant negative effect on academic helplessness. Overall self-concept significantly mediated the relationship between student-teacher relationship and academic helplessness. Among the subdimensions of self-concept, academic self-concept and significant-other self-concept showed significant indirect effects, whereas general self-concept and emotional self-concept did not. These findings suggest that a positive student-teacher relationship may reduce academic helplessness by fostering students’ academic self-concept and their sense of worth in relation to significant others.
This study is meaningful in that it examined academic helplessness in elementary school students, a group that has received relatively little attention in previous research. It also underscores the importance of both relational and psychological factors in understanding academic helplessness during this developmental period. The findings suggest that efforts to reduce academic helplessness should focus not only on positive teacher-student relationships but also on supporting students’ sense of competence in their academic abilities and interpersonal relationships.
Keywords: academic helplessness, student-teacher relationship, self-concept, elementary school students
