This study aims to understand the experience of 12 participants (A–L) and the researcher through the lens of narrative inquiry within the “Great Books” reading group in Ulsan. Investigating the meanings of experiences and subsequent life transformations associated with classical reading through engagement in reading, debating, and interaction has yielded significant insights and shifts in perspective within the field of lifelong education.
The “Great Books” reading group operates by reading designated classics based on the Great Books of the Western World list and holding weekly meetings. This group was selected under the premise that relying exclusively on classical texts provides a unique context for observing characteristics and dynamics rarely found in conventional book clubs. Having established the group in Ulsan in June 2022, the researcher has operated it for four years as of 2026. For this study, participants were selected using a “criterion-based sampling” strategy, specifically targeting members with an attendance rate of 80% or higher during the one–year period from November 2024 to October 2025. Through this approach, the study aimed to explore in depth how long–term, consistent engagement in classical reading and discussion shapes meaningful experiences for learners.
This study was conducted as a qualitative case study. From January to December 2025, discourse within the reading group was recorded with the consent of the participants. Subsequently, from October to December 2025, individual in-depth interviews or focus group interviews(FGI) were conducted with the 12 selected participants. The recorded field data were analyzed using the narrative method, specifically utilizing the three-dimensional inquiry space proposed by Clandinin and Connelly, which encompasses temporality, sociality, and place to study experience through stories.
Based on the collected data, the research findings regarding the experiences reported by participants in the classic literature reading group are as follows:
First, while adult participants’ reading tendencies are influenced by their developmental environments, their “intrinsic aspirations” function as a more critical factor.
Second, for senior learners undergoing life transitions and middle-aged learners experiencing menopause, the classical reading group serves as a “space for communication and intellectual growth” that provides psychological stability and fosters life reflection.
Third, the ‘Great Books Reading’ program, designed for systematically reading of Western classics, presents a deeply compelling challenge for middle-aged and older adults seeking to deepen their humanistic literacy; however, its extensive volume of texts and Eurocentric limitations induce psychological resistance and fatigue. Therefore, to promote classical reading groups, it is necessary to reconsider learners’ diverse needs regarding text selection.
Fourth, participants who met the criteria of this study regarded the intellectual superiority and “pleasure of ostentation” stemming from the act of reading classics as something shameful. Instead, based on the sense of accomplishment derived from independently completing demanding texts, they utilized their “inner pride” as an intrinsic driver for lifelong learning.
This study examined the experiences of participants gathering to read Western classics, investigating how classical reading influences individual lives and what significance the classical reading group holds as a social arena. By identifying the drivers that draw the public toward reading classics—a practice often perceived as difficult and tedious-this research seeks to academically demonstrate the sense of achievement and pleasure derived from this process. Ultimately, it is anticipated that this study will contribute to establishing strategic directions and practical frameworks for reading and lifelong education.

(Great Books of the Western World)’을 기반으로 정해진 고전을 읽고 매주 1회 독서모임을 진행한다.
