Development and Evaluation of a Cooperative Activity-Based Group Art Therapy Program for Improving Peer Relationships and Social Self-Esteem among Children in Community Child Centers CHAE YUN HEE Advisor: Prof. Moon, Jeong-Min Department of Art Therapy, Graduate School of Chosun University The purpose of this study was to develop a cooperative activity-based group art therapy program to improve peer relationships and social self-esteem among fourth- to sixth-grade children attending community child centers and to examine its effectiveness. To achieve this purpose, the study was conducted in two phases: Study I for program development and Study II for program evaluation. In Study I, the goals and contents of the program were established through a review of previous studies and a needs assessment. The final program was developed through expert validation and a pilot study. The completed program consisted of 12 sessions organized into four stages: adaptation, understanding, relationship, and growth. It was designed to promote peer interaction and cooperative experiences through collaborative art activities. In Study II, the effectiveness of the developed program was evaluated using an experimental group and a comparison group with pretest, posttest, and follow-up assessments. The participants were 20 fourth- to sixth-grade children attending community child centers in G City, including 10 children in the experimental group and 10 in the comparison group. The experimental group participated in the cooperative activity-based group art therapy program for 12 sessions, conducted twice a week for 80 minutes per session, while the comparison group received no intervention. Peer relationship and social self-esteem scales were administered to evaluate the program effects. The collected data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and independent-samples t-tests. In addition, qualitative analyses were conducted using session observation records, artwork analyses, and participant satisfaction questionnaires to examine changes that occurred throughout the intervention. The findings of this study are summarized as follows. First, the cooperative activity-based group art therapy program was found to be effective in improving positive peer relationships and reducing negative peer relationships among children attending community child centers. Second, participants demonstrated improvements in social self-esteem, and these positive changes tended to be maintained after the completion of the program. Third, the qualitative findings indicated that the children experienced increased peer interaction and cooperation through collaborative activities. They developed positive relationships by recognizing and supporting one another's strengths, expressed their emotions and experiences with greater confidence, and showed improvements in social self-esteem through positive peer relationship experiences. Fourth, the participants reported a high level of overall satisfaction with the program. In particular, they evaluated collaborative art-making activities with their peers positively. In conclusion, the cooperative activity-based group art therapy program developed in this study was found to be effective in improving peer relationships and social self-esteem among children attending community child centers. In particular, cooperative art activities that promoted interaction, collaboration, and positive interpersonal experiences played an important role in enhancing peer relationships and social self-esteem. Therefore, the program is expected to serve as an effective practical intervention for promoting peer relationships and social self-esteem among children attending community child centers.
