A Study on the Effects of Lower-Body Massage Using the Gua Sha Therapy in Middle-Aged Women - Focusing on Autonomic Nervous System Balance, Vascular Elasticity, Stress, and Pain - Jung Hwa Suk Advisor: Prof. Hong, Ran, M.D, Ph.D. Department of Complementary and Alternative Medicine Graduate School of Chosun University The purpose of this study was to empirically examine the effects of a lower-body massage intervention using Gua Sha therapy on autonomic nervous system function, vascular function, stress, and pain in middle-aged women. The participants consisted of 30 middle-aged women randomly selected from visitors to J Healing Center located in Suseong-gu, Daegu. The intervention was conducted once a week for a total of 8 weeks using a Gua Sha-based lower-body massage program. The study employed a single-group pre–post design, and measurements of autonomic nervous system indices, vascular elasticity, stress, and pain levels were analyzed using paired t-tests. The results showed that autonomic activity significantly increased, and autonomic balance changed in the direction of improvement, indicating recovery of autonomic nervous system function. In addition, both arterial and peripheral vascular elasticity significantly increased, while vascular status scores decreased, suggesting overall improvement in vascular function. Both physical stress levels significantly decreased, and pain levels were also significantly reduced. Correlation analysis revealed that, after the intervention, the relationships among autonomic function, vascular function, stress, and pain became more systematically reorganized, indicating that improvements in physiological function were associated with psychological stability and pain reduction. These findings suggest that Gua Sha-based lower-body massage is an effective non-pharmacological intervention that improves physiological health by facilitating autonomic regulation and enhancing circulatory function, beyond simple localized relaxation effects. In particular, it may serve as an effective health management strategy for alleviating chronic fatigue, poor circulation, stress, and pain commonly experienced by middle-aged women. Future studies should adopt randomized controlled trial designs to more clearly establish the causal effects of the intervention. In addition, studies with larger and more diverse samples, including participants of various age groups and health conditions, are needed to enhance the generalizability of the findings.
