Today’s adolescents are increasingly exposed to unverified information and sensationalized content through OTT platforms, YouTube, and social media, often consuming such material without sufficient critical filtering. These changes in the visual media environment highlight the need for education that goes beyond passive viewing and instead fosters an understanding of the aesthetic principles of visual media and the ability to engage with them critically. Accordingly, this study aims to investigate the aesthetic functions of mise-en-scène, a key technique in visual aesthetics, and to explore ways to systematically apply it within art education. As research methods, this study employed literature analysis of books, monographs, prior studies, and academic journal articles related to mise-en-scène, together with analyses of actual visual media cases. Additionally, the revised art curriculum for 2022 and current textbooks were examined. First, the concept and constituent elements of mise-en-scène were theoretically reviewed. Subsequently, examples of mise-en-scène found in various media—including films, television dramas, advertisements, and music videos—were analyzed from four perspectives: (1) the formative elements and principles of space, (2) psychological expression through the use of light and color, (3) the symbolism of nonverbal charades, and (4) pictorial expression achieved through framing and composition. Next, by reviewing prior research and analyzing textbooks, the current status of the educational use of mise-en-scène in art education was examined, and specific instructional strategies were proposed according to the domains of aesthetic experience, expression, and appreciation outlined in the 2022 revised art curriculum. The findings indicate that mise-en-scène possesses significant educational value in art education from five perspectives: the expansion of creative visual communication skills and expressive domains, the cultivation of media literacy and visual literacy, the expansion of popular culture and artistic experiences, practical art education connected to everyday life, and the provision of career exploration opportunities in the field of visual media arts. In particular, mise-en-scène education can cultivate creative visual communication skills, helping learners grow in connection with their own lives into active producers and culturally engaged individuals equipped with critical thinking skills, which is of great significance. Moreover, the use of visual materials familiar to students such as K-content was found to enhance both learner interest and educational effectiveness. This study holds academic significance in that it systematically examines mise-en-scène as a visual aesthetics concept from the perspective of art education and clarifies its educational value. Furthermore, it provides a theoretical foundation demonstrating that mise-en-scène education can effectively contribute to fostering media literacy and creative convergence competencies emphasized in the current curriculum.
